Right-Wing Protest in Jerusalem Challenges High Court Ahead of Key Hearing

Thousands gathered for a "Freedom Demonstration" in Jerusalem on Thursday evening, protesting against the pending High Court hearing regarding petitions against a controversial law aiming to revoke the reasonable cause clause. The event, titled "They will not take away our voice," drew significant support from the right-wing camp, with around ten thousand demonstrators in attendance.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich took to the podium, launching a pointed attack on Supreme Court President Ester Hayut, declaring, "Don't you dare invalidate fundamental laws." Joining in the verbal assault, Minister of Information Galit Distal Atabrian directed her ire at the government's legal adviser, Gali Beharve-Miara, warning, "If you throw our election in the trash - you have nothing to do with me."
Demonstrators from across the country, including the Jordan Valley, Benjamin, Samaria, and Mount Hebron, made their way to Jerusalem to participate in the rally. Amidst the sea of protesters, a peculiar sight emerged, as individuals dressed as bananas chanted slogans such as "Banana Republic of the High Court." Notably, some protesters displayed signs reading "Yigal Amir Tzedek" and "Amiram Ben Oliel Tzedek," which prompted attempts by others to conceal and discard them.
Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana's address, in which he sternly asserted that "the Knesset will not humbly accept its trampling," was projected on a large screen. Organizers of the demonstration argued that should the proposed amendment to the Basic Law: the Judiciary be rejected, the High Court could push the nation into a constitutional crisis. They asserted, "It does not have the authority to disqualify the people's choice."
Minister of Settlements and National Tasks Orit Struck spoke passionately to the assembled crowd, declaring, "You are right to demand governance. We came here to make it clear that even if a thousand times the dictatorship is called democracy - we will not forget what democracy really is. We will not forget what our voters sent us to do, and we will bring what you sent us to bring."
MK Boaz Bismut, representing the Likud party, echoed Struck's sentiments, stating, "Netanyahu reached out for talks, but Gantz rejected it. The truth is, and you know it very well, Lapid and Gantz are prisoners of the protest. Remember well - the legal reform is our declaration of freedom. We will not give up and will work towards a balanced committee for appointing judges. One in which justice will not only be spoken - but also seen."
Distal Atbarian added her voice to the chorus, saying, "Atonement for our ultra-Orthodox brothers, and especially atonement for the disciples of the sages, thanks to whom the Holy One, blessed be He, protects us. Gali in Rabbi Miara, if you throw our election in the trash - you have a business with me and two million other citizens. Your voice is not worth an inch of the voice of my Persian father. We will never break. We are in charge - and you will not take it so quickly. We are not afraid of you."
The "Freedom Demonstration" illuminated the deep divides within Israeli politics and the fierce opposition to potential changes in the country's judicial system, setting the stage for a critical High Court hearing on the contentious law.
