Israel Secures 28 Million Eggs Ahead of Holidays to Prevent Shortage
Posted on Aug 28, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski
In a bid to avert potential egg shortages during the upcoming holidays, Israel's Ministry of Agriculture has granted import licenses for a staggering 28 million eggs from Ukraine, Spain, and Poland. The move comes as a proactive measure to ensure a steady egg supply for the festive season. Unlike previous years, consumers are unlikely to experience price hikes despite recent fluctuations in currency exchange rates, as the cost of the imported eggs is closely monitored and controlled.
This pre-emptive action stands in contrast to the egg shortage crisis faced in 2020, which necessitated the import of 30 million eggs just before Passover. Safety nets were even provided to importers in case of unsold stock. However, this year, authorities predict no such scarcity, except for a potential shortfall in large eggs categorized as "large." The unfortunate demise of tens of thousands of laying hens during a recent heatwave has resulted in reduced production of these large eggs. The extreme temperatures took a toll on approximately 10,000 chickens in Moshav Margaliot alone, impacting the sensitive mature layers that yield the larger eggs.
Shmuel Lesser, proprietor of Lesser company - Israel's leading egg distributor, affirmed that the challenges surrounding egg imports have intensified due to global factors such as the conflict in Ukraine and the volatile currency exchange rates. Lesser explained that their supplier encountered delays last week, causing a shipment of eggs to miss its scheduled departure from port. Consequently, these eggs are now expected to arrive late, leading to a decreased per-egg value.
Despite the potential financial setback, Lesser emphasized their commitment to importing eggs in time for Rosh Hashanah, even if it results in a loss. Their primary concern is to prevent shortages and ensure a smooth holiday season for customers across various marketing chains.
Israel maintains a robust demand for eggs, with an annual per capita consumption of approximately 250 eggs. Domestic egg production accounts for around two million eggs annually. Notably, the country's food industry predominantly utilizes egg powders due to their extended shelf life of two years and space-efficient storage compared to fresh eggs. These powders find applications in baking, sauces, and various culinary preparations.
Lesser is also the proprietor of Cham 2000, the sole enterprise in Israel specializing in processing eggs into powders. Additionally, they supply pre-prepared frozen omelets to institutional entities, including the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), hotels, and in-flight meals. This unique contribution helps cater to the diverse culinary demands of these establishments.
As the holiday season approaches, Israel's strategic planning for egg imports aims to maintain the availability of this essential commodity and ensure the smooth functioning of various sectors that rely on egg-based products.
