Ultra-Orthodox Male Employment Rate Reaches All-Time High, Signaling Positive Shift in Trends

Posted on Aug 15, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

The employment rate of ultra-Orthodox men has surged to an all-time high of 55.8% in the second quarter, according to the latest data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). This milestone marks a notable departure from the employment patterns observed in recent years and suggests a positive shift in societal norms among the younger generation. The increase is particularly noteworthy considering that the employment rate had been oscillating between 50% and 52% since 2015.

The rise in employment rates among ultra-Orthodox men has been attributed to a combination of factors, including changes in financial dynamics and shifts in the broader economic landscape. A surge in interest rates, modifications in the mortgage market, and changes in the cost of living have been identified as driving forces behind the transformation within the ultra-Orthodox community. This trend has been predicted by experts in the field, such as Dr. Eitan Regev, the Vice President of Research and Data at the ultra-Orthodox Institute for Policy Studies.

Dr. Regev had forecasted that these economic changes would exert a profound impact on the ultra-Orthodox sector, specifically leading to increased integration of ultra-Orthodox men in the labor market. He believes that the traditional ultra-Orthodox economic model, which relied heavily on early property acquisition upon marriage, has been challenged by these changes. As a result, the employment rate is projected to continue climbing, potentially surpassing the 60% mark within the next five years.

One significant aspect of this transformation is the changing perception of employment among the ultra-Orthodox population. Historically, there had been a tendency for ultra-Orthodox men to prioritize religious studies in yeshivas, often due to financial support in the form of allowances. However, with the changing economic landscape, the social and economic benefits of entering the workforce have become more apparent. Notably, the economic disparity between ultra-Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jewish men has drawn attention, with an annual salary gap of over 100% being highlighted.

Experts emphasize that to further enhance the earning capacity and productivity of the ultra-Orthodox workforce, better preparation for the challenges of the labor market is essential. The delayed entry of many ultra-Orthodox individuals into the job market has limited their occupational development and earning potential. Experts also point out that addressing this gap requires a multifaceted approach that includes targeted training programs and the provision of opportunities to develop the necessary skills for success in a diverse and competitive labor market.

The labor market integration of the ultra-Orthodox population has received praise from various quarters, including Labor Minister Yoav Ben Tzur. Minister Tzur hailed the increase in employment rates among the ultra-Orthodox as a substantial contribution to the economy, emphasizing the benefits derived from a diversified, skilled, and high-quality workforce. The Kamah Foundation, an organization dedicated to integrating the ultra-Orthodox into the job market, also lauded these developments, highlighting the positive impact of ongoing efforts to encourage employment within the ultra-Orthodox community.

The increasing focus on employment among ultra-Orthodox men reflects not only changing economic dynamics but also a broader societal shift towards valuing both religious and economic pursuits. This shift has the potential to reshape the traditional employment landscape within the ultra-Orthodox community and contribute to the overall growth and development of the nation's economy.
