Public transportation prices for app users are set to increase by 12%

Posted on Jul 24, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

Public transportation prices for app users are set to increase by 12% starting tomorrow, as per the recent supervision order on public transport fares. Commuters relying on popular applications such as Hop-on, Pango, and Mobit will face higher fares, with a single city trip rising from NIS 5.5 to NIS 6, and a daily pass from NIS 12.5 to NIS 14.

The decision to hike fares exclusively for app users was not officially communicated to the public, leading to confusion and frustration among passengers. Despite inquiries, the Ministry of Transportation has chosen not to respond to requests for clarification, leaving commuters in the dark about the impending changes.

According to the supervision order on travel prices in public transportation, the updated prices for app users should have taken effect on June 25. However, with an agreement between the Finance and Transport Ministries, the price increase was postponed to take effect tomorrow, August 1.

The delayed implementation on apps has raised eyebrows, as fares for multi-line and paper card users are also slated for an upward adjustment on August 1. This has fueled speculation among passengers about the reasons behind the selective increase for app users and the lack of transparency from the authorities.

The billing system in applications, such as Hop-on, Pango, and Mobit, operates from the 25th of the month until the 24th of the following month. Conversely, other payment methods like Reb-Ko charge users from the 1st of the month until the end. This billing discrepancy might explain the difference in the effective date of the fare hike for various payment options.

Despite the imminent price surge, using apps for payment may still be more advantageous for some commuters. With the pay-as-you-go feature, app users can benefit from payment flexibility based on actual trips made, avoiding commitments and prepayment. In contrast, multi-line cardholders have to pay in advance, potentially locking themselves into higher fares.

The Ministry of Transportation's failure to inform the public and address inquiries has sparked outrage and demands for transparency. As the fare increase looms, many commuters are left to wonder about the implications of this decision and how it aligns with the government's efforts to promote public transportation usage.

As the public braces for the impact of these price adjustments, commuters are expressing their concern over the lack of clarity surrounding the Ministry's decision-making process. Calls for the authorities to address these issues and provide a clear explanation continue to mount, leaving passengers eagerly awaiting an official response.
