Future: possibility of electricity transmission via electrical cables in the sea in Israel
Posted on Jul 4, 2023 by Ifi Reporter
The National Planning and Construction Council, chaired by Rabbi Natan Elnathan, decided on the preparation of a national outline plan for electricity transmission from Ashkelon to the central region to Haifa, which will examine the possibility of electricity transmission via electrical cables in the sea.
Also, as part of the plan, the possibility of connecting the Israeli electricity network to Cyprus (through which connection to Greece and the European network will be possible) and other international connections in the future will be examined.
The national council was presented with the necessity of transmitting electricity from the south of the country to the demand areas in the center, where the demand reaches about 35% of the total national demand for electricity and will even grow at an average annual rate of more than 3%, while the vast majority of electricity production is located and planned in the south of the country ( over 65%). The plan will allow an improvement in the reliability of the electricity supply by allowing a significant increase in the scope of electricity transmission and will be a separate and additional strip to the existing system.
During the planning process, the engineering aspects involved in transferring energy in large capacities over long distances will be examined, while examining the various existing technologies. Also, as part of the review of the impact on the environment, all the environmental aspects involved in the construction of the power cables and their ongoing operation will be examined.
Director General of the Planning Administration, Rafi Elmaleh: "As part of the estimates for the increase in the country's population, the Planning Administration is working to preserve Israel's energy security. The promotion of a transmission line is a national mission to ensure the supply of electricity to the demand areas in the center, including the Gush Dan area, and will enable the transmission of electricity from power plants and renewable energy production facilities in the south of the country and meet the demand for electricity, which is growing at an average annual rate of more than 3% per year."
