approved: the construction of the container and building terminal in the southern port

Posted on Oct 30, 2018 by Ifi Reporter

The housing cabinet approved a plan that would allow the construction of the container and building terminal, as well as the development work required to operate the southern port and the corridor to which it has access. The plan defines the boundaries of the operational area, ports connecting the terminal to land, and the transportation access to the terminal via a road and a railway extension that will reach the port and will be able to transport the containers to and from it. The plan includes provisions for the protection of the environment, inter alia, in accordance with the recommendations of the environmental impact assessment prepared for the plan.
The plan was approved in light of the recommendation of the National Council for Planning and Construction about two months ago. The plan is a continuation of additional plans approved by the National Council and includes the outline plan for the southern port as well as the detailed national plan for the naval structure. This year, the National Council also approved a detailed plan for a temporary route to the port, until a permanent plan is prepared to connect the port to Route No. 4.
Today, despite air imports, most of the produce reaching Israel still reaches the seaports. The purpose of the port is to meet the needs of the economy in the field of maritime trade, to meet the changing needs of the port as the global fleet changes and to meet the needs of the State of Israel as reflected in the strategic plans for 2040.
The port is suited for huge ships carrying up to 18,000 containers and the depth of water in the area is over 17 meters. The container terminal will include two tracks with a total length of 2,100 m and is planned for a maximum capacity of 1.5 million tons per year.
