Expenditure in food chains ahead of Passover this year was, as expected, lower than in 2020, but higher than in 2019. This is according to Sterncast data. The data is based on about 2,600 national chains, supermarkets, mini-markets and convenience stores that broadcast real sales data from the box office to Sterncast.
Sales in the food market in the four weeks leading up to Passover in 2021 amounted to NIS 4.18 billion, compared with NIS 5.04 billion in 2020, a decrease of 17%. Compared to 2019, which was a normal year in consumption, this is an increase of 4.23%. Passover sales then amounted to NIS 4.01 billion. Passover eve falls in 2019 on a Friday, compared to Shabbat this year.
Food sales alone amounted to NIS 2.96 billion this year, an increase of 4% compared to 2019 - then reached NIS 2.85 billion, but a decrease of 19% compared to 2020, when sales soared to Passover to NIS 3.65 billion.
Egg sales, which reached NIS 106.08 million in 2020 due to over-purchase and accumulation of eggs among consumers, amounted to NIS 91.97 million this year, a decrease of about 13%. Compared to 2019, this is an 8% increase in sales, so egg sales totaled NIS 84.9 million.
Sales of household products totaled NIS 345 million in Passover 2021, compared with NIS 426 million in 2020, a decrease of 19%, and NIS 325 million in 2019, an increase of 6%.
