Ofek Aerial Photography Acquires Cutting-Edge LiDAR System to Combat Wildfires and Enhance Mapping Capabilities
Posted on May 18, 2025 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski
Ofek Aerial Photography, a leading Israeli company in aerial imaging and geographic mapping, announced it has acquired one of the world’s most advanced aerial LiDAR systems. This acquisition marks a significant step forward in Israel’s capabilities for wildfire prevention, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure planning.
The LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system is an airborne laser scanning technology that enables precise 3D mapping of terrain, vegetation, and built environments. This new system is expected to dramatically enhance the speed, accuracy, and versatility of Ofek’s operations in both civilian and emergency response sectors.
Transformative Capabilities for Fire Prevention
The system’s advanced capabilities include:
-
Fuel Load Mapping – Identifying areas at high risk of wildfire based on vegetation density and dryness.
-
Forest Structure Analysis – Detecting gaps and densities in forest areas to assist in planning preventive thinning and controlled burns.
-
Fire Spread Prediction Modeling – Simulating fire behavior in real-time using topography, wind direction, and vegetation data.
-
Seasonal Change Monitoring – Tracking changes in vegetation and identifying emerging natural hazards across different times of year.
-
Support for Field Operations – Providing real-time data for forestry programs, environmental engineering, and the design of buffer zones.
Pilot Programs to Launch with National Agencies
Ofek plans to launch pilot projects with local authorities, the Fire and Rescue Authority, and the KKL-JNF (Jewish National Fund). These projects aim to solidify Ofek’s position as a national leader in environmental and emergency mapping services.
“Real-Time Solutions in the Era of Climate Change”
“In an era of climate change and rising wildfire threats, we are proud to be among the first in Israel to deploy a mobile, operational, and accurate LiDAR system,” said Dror Morad, CEO of Ofek Aerial Photography. “This technology will empower municipalities, environmental organizations, and emergency services to better manage environmental risks in real time.”
With its investment in LiDAR technology, Ofek positions itself at the forefront of Israel’s climate resilience efforts, offering tools that can save lives, protect ecosystems, and support data-driven urban and rural planning.
