IDF Officer Killed in Southern Gaza Blast; Several Soldiers Injured
Posted on Jun 16, 2025 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski
Captain Tal Movshovitz, 28, from Me’ro’at, was killed Monday in an explosion that targeted an IDF Hummer vehicle in southern Gaza. The blast, which occurred during an operation by Battalion 12 of the Golani Brigade, also injured several other soldiers.
Movshovitz served as Deputy Company Commander in the 7086th Engineering Battalion, part of the Golani Brigade. An initial IDF investigation revealed that the explosive device was followed by a coordinated ambush, in which terrorists opened fire on the mounted unit immediately after the blast.
Movshovitz is survived by his wife Eliana, two children, parents, three brothers, and a sister. Modi’in Maccabim Re’ut Mayor Haim Bivas extended condolences, saying:
"On my behalf and on behalf of all city residents, I send my deepest condolences to the Movshovitz family."
Operational Constraints Following War with Iran
The deadly incident comes amid changing IDF deployments across Gaza, influenced by regional tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict with Iran, the need to reinforce the Jordanian border, and preparations for additional escalation scenarios.
The IDF has thinned forces in parts of the Gaza Strip, especially in the south, leading to slower operational tempo and greater exposure to ambushes. In some areas, battalions are being deployed under different brigade commands, including the unusual attachment of the 12th Battalion (Golani) to the Paratroopers Brigade in Khan Yunis.
Wave of Casualties in Recent Weeks
The death of Captain Movshovitz adds to a growing list of Israeli casualties in southern Gaza:
-
Maj. Gen. (res.) Noam Shemesh, 21, from Jerusalem, a platoon commander in the Kfir Brigade, was killed Saturday by anti-tank fire in Khan Yunis.
-
About a week and a half ago, four IDF soldiers were killed in a building collapse in Bnei Suheila, near Khan Yunis:
-
Maj. Gen. (res.) Chen Gross, 33, from Magen Yasiya, a soldier in the Maglan commando unit
-
Sergeant Major Yoav Rever, 19, from Sde Warburg (Yahalam unit)
-
Maj. Gen. Tom Rothstein, 23, from Ramat Gan
-

-
-
A few days earlier, Maj. Gen. (res.) Alon Perks, 20, also from Neve Yarak, was killed in Shajaiyah during a close-quarters encounter with terrorists.
-
A day prior to Perks’ death, three Givati Brigade soldiers were killed in a large explosion in Jabalia, northern Gaza:
-
Sergeant Major Omer Van Gelder, 22, from Ma’ale Adumim
-
Sergeant Lior Steinberg, 20, from Petah Tikva
-

Ongoing Challenges Amid Multiple Fronts
The IDF continues to face mounting pressure on multiple fronts, juggling operational duties in Gaza, the Jordanian border, and strategic readiness against Iran. As the military shifts resources and adapts to evolving threats, soldiers remain vulnerable to guerrilla-style attacks, such as IEDs, ambushes, and anti-tank fire.
The security establishment has yet to confirm if the terrorist cell involved in the Hummer attack was neutralized.
