The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court ordered a resident of Ashkelon to compensate journalist Guy Peleg with NIS 568,000, after she did not submit the defense to the defamation lawsuit against her. Peleg sued the woman for defamatory posts on Facebook.
The lawsuit filed through attorneys Assaf Sharaf and Amir Goldfarb referred to four publications in the woman's private account, alleging that Peleg was a "sex offender," "rapist," and "arrested on suspicion of rape." After the statutory deadline for filing a defense and the defendant refrained from filing it, the prosecution team filed a motion with the court for a judgment in the absence of defense and the court ordered the defendant to pay the tribunal NIS 568,000 and another NIS 34,145 for the tribunal's fees.
In a post that received 35 likes and ten shares from May this year, she wrote that "Guy Peleg tried to rape but the prosecutor's office closed this case as to why he is paying the bill and raging against the prime minister." In response to the post, harsh words were hurled at Peleg, such as "What did he try to rape with, with his ears?" And "tried to rape Dumbo's baby."
In another post published by the defendant the next day, it was written that "even if I walk in the valley of Peleg, I will not be afraid, and both Derek and Avihagoel Kleikman will go to hell." Several months earlier in September, the defendant wrote in another post on her account that "Guy Peleg will return with sexual offenses. In response to the post, one of the surfers wrote: "Exclusive exposure. Guy Peleg is suspected of sexual offenses and the lawyer is protecting him." The statement of claim also includes additional publications.
Prior to the filing of the lawsuit, the advertiser received a warning letter in which she was required to compensate Peleg for the damages caused to him. In response to the letter, she admitted to the publications, but claimed that "Man Dhao" took over her Facebook account and "published the publications without her knowledge" and that her Facebook account was "hacked by the prosecution's cyber system."
In the lawsuit, Peleg claimed that in light of his public status, his professional prestige, his good name and his reputation, the damage caused to him is particularly great and therefore the compensation should be particularly great. Peleg's lawyers also relied on the court's ruling in the defamation lawsuit filed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against journalist Yigal Sarna in 2018.
