"In the Light and Not in the Pit": Iris Haim Delivers Powerful Message of Hope and Reconciliation

Posted on May 27, 2025 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

In an emotional and inspiring event held at the Palace Modi'in assisted living home, Iris Haim, mother of abductee Yotam Haim, who was tragically killed by the IDF in a mistaken operation, delivered a lecture titled "In the Light and Not in the Pit."

Speaking on behalf of the residents of the Palace Modi'in, operated by the Azrieli Group, Iris shared a story of love, unimaginable grief, and the courageous choice to find light amid deep sorrow.

In her lecture, Iris recounted the heartbreaking journey of losing her son under tragic circumstances, blending personal pain with a broader national narrative. Her words resonated deeply with the audience, as she emphasized the power of resilience, empathy, and the human capacity for healing.

"I chose to speak not from the pit of despair, but from the light of love," Iris said, echoing the theme of her talk. Her story highlighted not only the depths of her loss but also her determination to seek meaning, reconciliation, and hope.

Historic Meeting with Yaakov Ben Tov

After the event, Iris Haim met with Yaakov Ben Tov, the son of Meir Toviansky, who was wrongfully executed by the Israeli military in 1948. The meeting marked a profound moment of unity, bringing together two individuals whose families bore the scars of mistaken military actions across generations.

This rare and touching encounter served as a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict and the ability to transform grief into a universal call for compassion, accountability, and humanity.

A Shared Message: Choosing Light Over Darkness

Yigal Oren, CEO of Palace Modi'in, reflected on the significance of the event, saying:
"The stories of Iris Haim and Yaakov Ben Tov both have one message: we must choose the light, even when the pit seems deep."

The event left a lasting impression on attendees, reminding them of the enduring strength of the human spirit and the importance of facing collective pain with courage and grace.
