Israel Railways has announced a series of train service reductions starting October 27, affecting several stations in southern Israel and the north, as part of ongoing electrification works across the railway network. The changes will impact Sderot, Nativot, Ofakim, Beer Sheva North, Beer Sheva Center, Havivim Rahat, Karmiel, and Ahihud stations.
Beginning after the holidays, train traffic will be suspended on Saturday evenings. It will end early on Fridays, around 12:00 noon, instead of the usual 3:00 p.m. Specifically, Sderot, Nativot, and Ofakim stations will close for service on Saturday nights. At the same time, Beer Sheva Central, Beer Sheva North University, and Havivim Rahat will also cease operations during that time.
Weekday Service Adjustments
On weekdays, train services will be adjusted, with Sderot station closing at approximately 8:00 p.m. and Ofakim and Nativot at around 9:00 p.m. Morning services will begin at 6:00 a.m. instead of 5:00 a.m. Passengers from Sderot, Nativot, and Ofakim have faced significant disruptions over the past year, lacking direct train access to Tel Aviv and relying on indirect routes via Beer Sheva.
Electrification Progress
Approximately 70% of the electrification process has been completed, with 700 km of the planned 1,000 km of tracks electrified. The project aims to enhance rail efficiency and reduce travel times. The electrification works will require temporary service suspensions, as infrastructure installations cannot occur on active tracks.
Bus Services to Increase
In response to the service cuts, the Ministry of Transportation will bolster bus routes in the affected areas. A shuttle system will also be implemented to help mitigate passenger inconvenience during the construction period.
Operational Adjustments
Changes in travel times are anticipated for late evening trains due to the single-track operation during construction. Israel Railways aims to expedite the electrification process and minimize disruptions for passengers, especially those in the Western Negev region.
As electrification efforts continue, Israel Railways is committed to improving service quality and efficiency in the long term, despite the immediate challenges for passengers.
