The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Sunday that Reserve Sergeant Noam Shemesh, 21, from Jerusalem, was killed in combat on Saturday in the southern Gaza Strip. Sergeant Shemesh served as a squad commander in the Shimshon Battalion of the Kfir Brigade and was fatally wounded by RPG fire during an operation in Khan Yunis.
On Friday, two combat engineers from the 601st Battalion sustained serious injuries during operational activity in northern Gaza. Both soldiers were evacuated to the hospital for medical treatment. The IDF has notified their families, and their conditions remain critical.
Four Soldiers Killed Last Week
Last week, four IDF soldiers lost their lives in Khan Yunis after entering a building that was later discovered to be booby-trapped. The soldiers killed in the incident were:
-
Special Sergeant (Res.) Chen Gross, 33, from Magen Yashya
-
First Sergeant Yoav Rever, 19, from Sde Warburg
-
Sergeant Tom Rothstein, 23, from Ramat Gan
-
First Sergeant Uri Yehonatan Cohen, 20, from Neve Yarak
The incident highlights the dangers Israeli forces continue to face as operations persist in densely urbanized and fortified areas of the Gaza Strip, particularly in and around Khan Yunis.
