An attempted attack on a synagogue and Jewish educational complex in West Bloomfield, Michigan, ended without civilian casualties on Thursday after security guards at the site shot and killed the suspected attacker, authorities said.

According to initial reports, a man driving a van crashed into a building at the complex that houses the Temple Israel synagogue as well as Jewish schools and early childhood education facilities. After the collision, the vehicle caught fire and the driver exited and opened fire, witnesses said.

Security guards stationed at the site responded immediately, fatally shooting the suspect. One guard sustained minor injuries during the incident.

A subsequent search of the attacker’s vehicle revealed explosives, raising suspicions that the suspect had planned to detonate a car bomb as part of the assault.

Children Present at the Time of the Incident

The incident occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m. local time. Dozens of children were reportedly inside the complex at the time, which includes a kindergarten and early childhood learning center.

Parents rushed to the scene after receiving permission from police to pick up their children. Schools in the surrounding area were placed under a “secure lockdown,” with students and staff instructed to remain inside while law enforcement secured the area.

Police: Security Response Prevented Greater Harm

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard praised the rapid response by security personnel and emergency services.

“A vehicle drove into the complex. There is one person deceased inside the vehicle. The vehicle caught fire,” Bouchard said during a briefing at the scene. “I am proud of the response not only from the security guards on the scene, but from all the officers and firefighters. We train for active shooter situations for exactly this reason.”

Authorities said the suspect’s body was severely burned, which could complicate efforts to identify him.

The sheriff added that law enforcement had recently increased coordination with local religious institutions and schools due to heightened security concerns.

“There had been alerts in recent weeks, and staff at the complex were very alert,” Bouchard said.

FBI and Police Investigating Possible Terror Motive

Large police forces were deployed to the scene as investigators searched the complex to determine whether the suspect had accomplices.

In a statement, Michigan authorities urged residents to avoid the area while law enforcement operations continued. Patrols around other places of worship in the region were also increased.

FBI Director Kash Patel said federal agents were assisting the investigation.

“FBI personnel are on scene with our Michigan partners responding to an apparent vehicle attack and active shooter incident at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan,” Patel wrote on social media.

Trump: “We Will Investigate This Case to the Fullest”

The White House said President Donald Trump had been briefed on the incident.

In a statement, Trump expressed solidarity with the local Jewish community.

“I want to send our love to the Jewish community in Michigan and to all the people in Detroit following the attack on the synagogue,” he said. “We will investigate this case to the fullest.”

The Jewish Federation of Detroit confirmed that an active security incident had occurred at Temple Israel and said Jewish institutions in the region were temporarily placed on lockdown.

Israel’s Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, warned that rising anti-Jewish incitement has contributed to growing threats against Jewish communities.

“The spreading of lies and incitement against Israel and Jews is causing a sharp increase in attacks and violence against Jewish institutions,” Akunis said.

Yaakov Hagoel, chairman of the World Zionist Organization, also condemned the incident, saying Jewish communities worldwide have faced increased threats since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East.

Largest Reform Synagogue in the United States

Temple Israel describes itself as the largest Reform synagogue in the United States, with approximately 12,000 members.

The complex includes an early childhood education center and provides educational and community programs for families and adults.

Authorities said the investigation into the attempted attack is ongoing.
