After the peaks in demand for high-tech registered last year, new data indicate a one-year low in the number of vacancies in the industry. The vacancy report for May-July published by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) shows that the number of vacancies for engineers in general decreased by 8% to 14,963 in July compared to the previous month, and that the number of vacancies for software developers decreased by a more significant rate of 11% , for 10,130 jobs.
This is the second month in a row in which the number of jobs in high-tech is decreasing, after about three months in which the number remained relatively the same - when before that there was a significant increase in the demand for workers in high-tech in the last year. In fact, last month it was reported that there were 17,650 engineers missing in the industry, a 7% decrease from May, and 12,780 software developers who were missing - a 6% decrease. Before that, the number of engineer vacancies peaked at over 19,000 in June, after a prolonged increase since August last year. Now the number of engineers missing in the industry has dropped to a level similar to what it was in September 2021, even then there were about 14 thousand engineers missing.
Meanwhile, it was announced that there were a total of 148,113 vacancies in the Israeli economy in July, compared to 149,868 vacancies in June, and the rate of vacancies in the economy was 4.85%. Unlike the situation in the high-tech industry, a significant increase in the number of vacancies was recorded last month in the field of construction and bus and truck drivers.
In the field of construction, there has been a significant increase in the shortage of house builders and the construction professions, and recently the contractors demanded to allow more workers from the territories to work in Israel and, if necessary, to also allow the importation of additional foreign workers for these professions, which many Israelis are not enthusiastic about working in. The economy now lacks 3,988 finishers, masons, plasterers, joiners and skeleton workers in the construction field - an increase of 15%. A 16% increase was recorded in the vacancies for house builders, builders and concrete layers, and the number of vacancies in this industry reaches 2,367.
A significant increase was also recorded as mentioned in the number of vacancies for bus and truck drivers, with one of the claims being that not enough courses are opened for drivers of these vehicles. Now there has been an 11% increase in demand in this area and the number of vacancies in the quarter ending in July has reached 4,423.
A lack of security guards is also noticeable, even though on September 1st their salary will increase by 10-15%. A total of 5,037 security guards are missing in the economy, an increase of 7%.
Other shortages in the economy this summer: 11,949 sales workers - a decrease of 4%, 10,449 waiters and bartenders - a decrease of 5%, 6,790 kitchen and cleaning workers in institutions and households - a decrease of 4% 3,747 telephone sales representatives, no change compared to the previous period, 5,702 nursing assistants - a decrease of 1%, 5,659 cooks - an increase of 3% and 2,758 clerks - also an increase of 3%.
