Rafael Defense Systems will unveil a new missile from its anti-tank missile family, Spike, as part of the international security exhibition MSPO to be held this week in Kielce, Poland. According to a statement issued by the company, it is an ER-2 spike considered to be a 5th generation missile.
Rafael says the new missile incorporates improvements and innovations compared to previous Spike anti-tank missiles, and can be launched at targets within 10 kilometers of the ground and toward targets from a range of 16 kilometers from the air.
It is an electro-optical, tactical, precision and multi-purpose missile that can be launched from all existing Spike missile launchers. Raphael says he has high penetration for a wide range of goals, thanks to his advanced battle head.
The improvements in these missiles are reflected in the ability to launch them from a helicopter with a radio-based radio frequency channel, unlike other missiles with fiber optic communications.
Rafael says a wireless radio channel enables maximizing the missile's energy capabilities while increasing its flight range.
Raphael also said that the new missile is equipped with a dual innovative headfinder that includes a thermal sensor that enables the detection of targets at long ranges. The missile incorporates a special target tracker that enables the fusion of real-time information and enables tracking of targets in a smoke-filled environment. According to company officials, these capabilities allow the missile to discover and destroy hidden targets as well.
The spike is considered one of the best anti-tank missiles in the world, and according to Raphael about 30 armies have already equipped themselves. So far, the company has sold about 30,000 missiles from the various versions of the spike.
Last week, the Australian government announced that it had chosen to acquire Rafael's LR-2 Spike missiles and said they would be installed on the new Boxer vehicles to be used by its military.
