Israeli information security company Check Point reports that Iranian elements tried to attack targets in Israel, using the giant loophole Log4j that was exposed last week. According to Check Point, a group of hackers from Iran tried to attack seven government and business targets in Israel in the last 24 hours. "The experiment took place yesterday between 16:00 in the afternoon and 2:00 in the morning. No such communication was observed with targets in any country other than Israel. Of course, the findings were passed on to the relevant authorities in the country," it was reported.
Check Point has identified that the source of the assault attempt is in a well-known Iranian group called APT35, known as charming kitten. "This group has in the past been attributed, by various sources, ties to the Iranian regime," it was reported.
Earlier in the Wall Street Journal it was reported that Microsoft and cyber company Medianant had identified hackers linked to China, Iran, North Korea and Turkey exploiting Log4j's weakness to attack targets.
Log4j vulnerability is a critical and widespread security breach discovered over the weekend that makes many organizations, software and technology services around the world an easy target for hackers. The security breach that has been discovered is in log4j, an open source library (a collection of software codes for free use) that is particularly common in the technological world. Because a very large portion of software developers in the world use Log4j, this security breach actually appears on countless servers, software and applications.
The situation is particularly serious because the breach allows the attacker to remotely run malicious code remotely - and thus infiltrate organizations and devices of private users. Because weakness exists in so many places, it takes organizations a long time and effort to correct it.
Since the discovery, there has been a race between companies trying to close and fix the loophole, and hackers trying to exploit it. In recent days there have been a series of reports of hackers attempting to carry out attacks and intrusions by exploiting the vulnerability.
According to Check Point, since Friday it has tracked down and stopped more than 1.8 million attempts to exploit the log4j vulnerability worldwide. The company has identified close to half (46%) of the corporate networks in the world and more than half (54%) of the corporate networks in Israel attempted attacks, although probably the amount of actual attacks is higher.
