Three Israeli universities were ranked among the top 100 universities in the world in 2021, in the Shanghai index, which is considered one of the main indices for university rankings. This is the first time since 2013 that three Israeli universities have managed to make the list. This is despite the government's attempts to harm their public status.
The Hebrew University was ranked 90th in the ranking and as the leading university in Israel, after failing to make the list of the top hundred in the previous year. According to the ranking, the Hebrew University is ranked 25th in the world in mathematics teaching and research, 25th in the field of communication, 30th in the world in law, and among the world leaders in political science and economics.
The Weizmann Institute is ranked 92nd, compared to 93 the previous year. The institute is ranked 75-51 in the world in many fields including mathematics, chemistry, computer science, and biology.
The Technion was ranked 94th in the ranking, an improvement over its situation last year, which was then ranked 150-101, although in 2018 it was ranked higher, 77th in the world. According to the ranking, the Technion ranks 16th in the world in aeronautical engineering.
Other Israeli universities were ranked in the list of the 600 best universities in the world. Tel Aviv University is ranked 200-151, a ranking in which it has performed steadily since 2017. According to the index, Tel Aviv University is ranked 37th in the world in mathematics studies, and 75-51 in places in communication and psychology studies.
Bar Ilan University, Ben Gurion University were ranked in the 500-401 places range, while the University of Haifa was ranked 600-501. Ariel University, whose status has been promoted by the government in recent years, has not entered the ranking.
In recent years, the government has been promoting Ariel University, while harming the public status of other universities. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett repeatedly called the universities a cartel when he served as education minister and promoted the establishment of the Ariel Medical School and the transformation of the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya into a university, contrary to the position of other universities that feared harm to their budgets and status.
