Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Israel Katz met with representatives of the Independents on Friday afternoon, with the aim of preventing the big rally scheduled for Saturday evening in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv. Despite the compromise attempts, the organizers renewed the required license from the police and it will go as planned.
Netanyahu, who presented the "Corona safety net" program on Thursday, spoke with one of the organizers, restaurant representative Roi Cohen, and other representatives who complain about the government's handling of the economic crisis following the Corona epidemic. At the meeting, Netanyahu immediately instructed the establishment of a roundtable forum with representatives of the self-employed and business owners to resolve the issues raised. The prime minister has decided that the forum will meet again next week to update the progress in resolving the issues raised at the meeting.
Netanyahu stressed to the independents that the government intends to meet its obligations. "The State of Israel has never taken these steps, because we have never been in this situation," he said. Finance Minister Katz added: "Your pain is understandable, and the worries are understandable. Out of all these meetings, clauses and things were born, and I think a plan has been formulated that is your plan. Everyone with what he represents, according to the levels of difficulty."
However, according to Cohen, the meeting between the representatives and the two was in a tense atmosphere. "We explained to him that there were people who fell between the chairs," Cohen said. "He listened to us and concluded that we would be his sensors from the field, and that every Friday there would be a working session with him - making sure the money goes to the bank accounts. Tomorrow is going to be a rally of the people who want to vent his rage, and that is ultimately the statement."
Ronen Miley, from the Bars and Clubs Association, who also took part in the meeting, came to the preparations in Rabin Square and called on business owners to demonstrate. "I return from the meeting and call on you to come tomorrow while following the guidelines of the Ministry of Health - social distance and wearing masks," he said.
However, the Association of Halls and Event Gardens has announced that it has agreed with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance to exhaust the negotiating route before leaving for the demonstration. "The Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance have made it clear that they will hold weekly meetings with us in parallel with the amendments that will be made to the outline presented yesterday, in order to ensure our survival," it was reported. "We will continue to work in the near future with representatives of the Treasury and the Prime Minister's Office, and we all hope that we will succeed in combining arms to secure the livelihoods of the 150,000 members of the industry."
Representatives from the Prime Minister's Office began contacting the protest organizers yesterday in order to stop the demonstration. "We are told a lot of things but mostly trying to explain to us that it is very dangerous at the level of the corona to hold the demonstration," the organizers of the demonstration said.
The self-employed intend to demonstrate on Saturday starting at 8:30 PM under the call for the release of the compensation money promised to the self-employed following the Corona crisis and the series and the creation of certainty going forward, according to the organizers. On the occasion of the demonstration and as a protest-solidarity act, the unions representing the bars, clubs and restaurants decided to close the business doors starting at 8pm tonight.
