US President Joe Biden addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, stating that a diplomatic solution to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is still possible. Biden emphasized the need for both sides to accept a ceasefire agreement, adding that "too many families have lost their homes," and described the humanitarian situation as "dire."

"I met with the families of the abductees, they are going through hell," said Biden, referring to the Israeli hostages held by Hamas. He called for immediate action on the proposal put forward by the US, Qatar, and Egypt, which has the support of the UN Security Council. The proposal includes a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Preventing a Wider War in the Region

Biden also touched on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, condemning Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel and expressing hope for a diplomatic resolution. "A diplomatic solution is still possible, and it is the only solution that will allow for long-term peace," Biden said, urging for the conflict to end to allow residents on both sides to return to their homes.

The Biden administration is actively working to broker a ceasefire that addresses both the Gaza and Lebanon conflicts. The initiative includes the release of Israeli hostages, a halt to Hezbollah's attacks, and the removal of Hezbollah forces from Israel's border.

Challenges to Ceasefire Negotiations

Despite Biden's push for peace, significant challenges remain. A senior Israeli official noted that while talks have continued, disagreements over the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and its timeline remain a sticking point. Meanwhile, recent Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets have inflicted heavy damage, raising hopes that Hezbollah may be more open to compromise.

The Biden administration hopes to achieve a ceasefire before the end of Biden’s term. However, senior officials have expressed skepticism about the chances of success. Biden has reiterated his commitment to achieving peace but acknowledges the difficulties involved.

International Reactions to the Conflict

The conflict has sparked intense reactions from international leaders. Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling it "genocide." He criticized the international community for failing to intervene, labeling it a "scandal."

Jordan’s King Abdullah II also condemned the Israeli response to the October 7 Hamas attack. He noted that Israel has killed more civilians, including children and journalists, than in any other conflict in recent years, accusing the Israeli government of violating the status quo at holy sites.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also spoke at the assembly, expressing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Erdoğan, in particular, called for Palestine’s membership in the UN, emphasizing the devastation and loss of life in Gaza.

Biden's Historical Perspective

During his speech, Biden referenced his early years as a senator, reflecting on the geopolitical tensions of the Cold War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War between Israel and Egypt, which eventually led to a historic peace agreement. "The situation can improve, we must not forget that," Biden said, urging for a long-term diplomatic solution that could lead to lasting peace in the Middle East.
