An American official and a former Israeli official, briefed on recent developments, revealed that the Biden administration has conveyed a stern warning to Iran: any further attacks on Israel will lead to a more robust Israeli response, which the U.S. may not be able to restrain.

The tension escalated after Iran launched an attack on Israel on October 1, following a series of targeted assassinations. In retaliation, Israel struck military targets within Iran, avoiding hits on nuclear reactors or oil facilities—potential future targets should hostilities continue.

U.S. Position on Iranian Retaliation
The American official stated, "We have informed the Iranians that we cannot stop Israel and we will not be able to ensure that the next attack will be as calibrated and targeted as the previous one." This message was reportedly delivered directly to Iranian authorities. White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre echoed this sentiment, asserting, "Iran does not need to respond to Israel's attack." She emphasized that should Iran choose to retaliate, the U.S. would support Israel in its defense.

Anticipated Iranian Response
Despite these warnings, senior officials predict that Iran is preparing for a significant retaliation, particularly before the upcoming U.S. presidential elections on November 5. An Iranian official stated, "This will be a painful and victorious response," raising concerns about an imminent escalation in hostilities.

Israeli intelligence suggests that Iran may execute this response from Iraqi territory, potentially involving the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and Shiite militias, utilizing ballistic missiles and drones. This strategy may allow Iran to avoid direct strikes on its territory, minimizing the risk of retaliation against key strategic sites within Iran.

Potential Israeli Counteractions
Both Israeli and American officials have indicated that Israel may still respond to an attack originating from Iraq, depending on the scale and impact of the assault. An Israeli official remarked, "It depends on how massive the attack will be and what its results will be," indicating a readiness to act decisively against perceived threats, regardless of their origin.

As tensions rise, the situation remains fluid, with both sides poised for potential escalation.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has directed the Supreme National Security Council to prepare for a potential military response against Israel, as reported by the New York Times. This decision follows a detailed assessment from military commanders regarding the damage inflicted on Iran's missile production capabilities, air defense systems, and energy infrastructure due to recent Israeli attacks.

The report indicated that the Israeli strikes resulted in casualties among Iranian military personnel, with at least four Israeli soldiers reportedly involved. Despite this, Israeli sources assert that Iran currently lacks the capability or intention to launch an immediate attack, claiming, “We eliminated Iran's entire S-300 system,” which could impede Iran’s offensive capabilities.

Threats of Retaliation from Iranian Officials
During a memorial ceremony for a senior Hezbollah figure killed in a recent Israeli attack, Iranian officials vowed a "severe" response to the Israeli aggression. Mohammad Mohammadi Golfaigani, head of Khamenei's office, emphasized that Iran would not ignore the casualties caused by Israeli strikes and would retaliate in a manner that would make Israel "repent."

Strategic Military Preparations Underway
Military commanders in Iran are reportedly compiling a list of potential targets within Israel. However, any attacks are likely to be delayed until after the upcoming U.S. presidential elections, as Iranian officials fear that escalated tensions could benefit former President Donald Trump's political campaign.

Israeli Military’s Response
In response to the escalating threats, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated at a military graduation ceremony that Israel can strike anywhere in Iran. This assertion underscores Israel's commitment to maintaining its security amid heightened threats from Iranian officials.

Concerns Over Iraqi Launch Sites
Sources suggest that Iran might consider launching attacks from Iraqi territory, although no immediate actions are anticipated. There have been unsuccessful attempts to fire rockets from Iraq recently, which have raised alarm among Israeli security officials.

Iran’s Denial of Significant Damage
Following the Israeli attacks, Iranian officials have attempted to downplay the extent of the damage, labeling Israeli claims of success as "psychological warfare." However, satellite imagery from AP indicates damage to critical facilities, including the Shahrod Space Center, known for satellite launches and ballistic missile production.

Escalating Rhetoric
The rhetoric surrounding potential Iranian retaliation has intensified, with a senior source stating that a "decisive and painful response" to Israeli attacks is imminent. The source hinted that this could occur before the U.S. elections, further complicating the geopolitical landscape in the region.

Khamenei's Calculated Approach
While Khamenei has expressed a willingness to respond to Israeli aggression, he also appears to favor avoiding an all-out war. His recent statements reflect a nuanced approach, cautioning against overestimating or underestimating the implications of the conflict.

As tensions continue to rise, the international community watches closely, wary of potential escalations that could destabilize the region further.
