The United States military carried out an early morning strike Thursday against an Iranian military target near the Strait of Hormuz, according to a senior official in Washington.

The operation was aimed at neutralizing what American officials described as an immediate threat to U.S. forces and international maritime traffic operating in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive waterways.

Explosions Reported Near Bandar Abbas

The incident began around 1:30 a.m. local time, when at least three explosions were heard east of the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas.

Iranian media outlets reported that air defense systems were activated for several minutes following the blasts, while authorities launched an investigation into the source of the explosions.

Shortly afterward, a U.S. official confirmed that American forces were responsible for the strike.

According to the official, the target was an Iranian military site that posed a direct threat to freedom of navigation and to the American military presence in the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Military Also Intercepted Iranian Drones

The Washington official added that, alongside the strike, American forces intercepted several unmanned aerial vehicles launched from Iran that were assessed as posing similar threats to naval vessels and military personnel in the area.

The incident marks the latest in a series of military confrontations between the United States and Iran in the Gulf region amid rising regional tensions.

The latest operation follows another U.S. strike carried out Tuesday in the same region.

During that incident, U.S. forces destroyed two boats belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps while they were reportedly deploying naval mines. American forces also targeted a surface-to-air missile site that had allegedly aimed weapons systems at U.S. fighter aircraft.

At the time, officials from United States Central Command stressed that the operations were defensive in nature and did not indicate the collapse of existing ceasefire understandings in the region.

Nuclear Talks Stall Amid Growing Military Tensions

The military escalation comes as diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran over a new nuclear agreement appear increasingly deadlocked.

Talks have reportedly slowed significantly due to disagreements surrounding the scale and future scope of Iran’s nuclear program.

Backed by an ultimatum issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, Washington is demanding stricter limitations on uranium enrichment and tighter international inspection mechanisms.

Iran, meanwhile, continues insisting that progress in negotiations depends on the removal of economic sanctions, the release of frozen assets, and renewed access to the international financial system.

The latest developments have heightened international concerns that diplomatic tensions could further evolve into broader military confrontation in the Gulf region.
