Israel Natural Gas Lines Company inaugurated the natural gas pipeline to Jerusalem in a ceremony attended by Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz and Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon. This is an 18-inch, 34-kilometer-long pipe, costing NIS 290 million.
The construction was done in two sections. The first part, the western one, starts close to the Sorek interchange on the Trans-Israel Highway and the second begins at the Zion Railroad station near Sha'ar Hagai. It ends at Beit Zayit. Only when this facility is completed can the gas flow to factories and consumers in the Jerusalem area. In 2020, the first consumers are expected to connect to the gas.
Gas consumption in Jerusalem is expected to be different from other areas in Israel, because private customers, especially for winter heating, are expected to use gas alongside industrial plants and institutional customers. Some institutional customers such as Hadassah Hospital, the Israel Museum, the Bank of Israel, Kiryat Ha'Leom and the Knesset have already signed an agreement for the supply of gas, and some are in negotiations.
At the ceremony, Energy Minister Dr. Yuval Steinitz said, "Through this and other gas pipelines that NATGAS is laying, we are connecting the State of Israel, improving and expanding natural gas transmission throughout the country, so we will reach more consumers. We will all be able to breathe cleaner air, we are in the midst of the natural gas revolution in Israel, and we will all benefit from it. "
Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon said, "The gas will reduce the cost of electricity for the families and will benefit the residents of the capital ... It is hard to believe that only a little over 70 years ago we liberated Jerusalem, so they took care of the water and were afraid of ' History. "
Chairman of Natural Gas Lines Company Eitan Padan noted, "We are connecting the gas highway to Jerusalem. This is an energetic supply of oxygen to the capital, and when the share of the line passes through the historical Burma Road, it is particularly exciting. "
