The Israeli intelligence community has revised its assessment, indicating that Iran may launch a direct attack on Israel in retaliation for the recent assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh. According to two sources familiar with the situation, the attack could occur within days, possibly before the upcoming summit on the abductee deal.

In a phone call with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed concerns over Iranian military preparations, which suggest that Iran is gearing up for a significant strike against Israel. Austin responded by pledging increased U.S. military support in the region, ordering the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, equipped with F-35 fighter jets, and the Georgia submarine, armed with guided missiles, to the Middle East.

Shift in Iranian Strategy

This shift marks a departure from recent assessments that suggested international pressure might deter Iran from a direct confrontation with Israel. The change in strategy comes amid an internal debate within Iran, with the Revolutionary Guards advocating for a harsher response than the April 13 attack, while Iran’s president and his advisors favored restraint.

Situation Remains Fluid

The situation remains fluid, with the possibility of further changes in Iran’s decision-making process. Despite the heightened alert, the IDF spokesperson clarified that there are currently no changes to the Home Front Command’s directives. The IDF and security establishment continue to monitor developments closely, particularly concerning Iran and Hezbollah, maintaining a high level of readiness.

Tensions in the Middle East are escalating as Israeli and American officials express concern over a potential Iranian attack. Senior officials in both countries have noted significant preparatory steps taken by Iran in its missile and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) arrays, reminiscent of actions taken prior to the April attack on Israel.

High-Level Discussions and Diplomatic Efforts

The situation has prompted high-level discussions between President Joe Biden and leaders from Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy. These talks focused on protecting Israel, advancing a deal for the release of hostages, and working towards a ceasefire in Gaza.

A senior Israeli official highlighted that Iran's public statements suggest a strong determination to carry out a significant attack, potentially more severe than the April incident. However, the exact timing of such an attack remains unknown.

U.S. State Department Response

During a press briefing, the Deputy Spokesperson of the U.S. State Department confirmed that the U.S. is assisting Israel in its defense against a possible Iranian attack. At the same time, diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent an escalation. The spokesperson also addressed Hamas' recent refusal to participate in upcoming negotiations, emphasizing the importance of proceeding with planned talks on a hostage deal and ceasefire this week.

The international community continues to closely monitor the situation as diplomatic and military preparations intensify.
