Hours after Hamas submitted its response to the proposal for a hostage deal and a cease-fire, Israel made it clear: the terrorist organization rejected the Israeli outline, as presented by US President Joe Biden in his speech at the end of last month.
It is not yet clear what exactly the answer includes, but a source privy to the details told the Reuters news agency that Hamas's answer includes a "new timetable" for a complete ceasefire - and a complete withdrawal of IDF forces from the Gaza Strip, "including Marfih." The AFP agency also published a similar report , and the person who was not aware of the details indicated to her that "amendments" had been introduced in the proposal.
The head of the Mossad, Dedi Barna, was updated this evening (Tuesday) on the details of Hamas's response, by the Prime Minister of Qatar, Muhammad al-Thani, and sources familiar with the details explained that Hamas changed "the entire proposal" in its response. According to them, "the meaning is clear - rejection of Biden's proposal".
A senior Israeli official added that while Biden emphasized in his speech that Hamas should accept the proposal as it is, and simply sign what was put on the table, Hamas introduced "fundamental changes" in the proposal - and therefore it seems that this is a negative answer.
The officials' words come hours after Hamas, after long days of waiting, delivered its answer to Qatari and Egyptian mediators. Already in the announcement he published it was possible to learn that the terrorist organization did not compromise on its main demand - a complete end to the war.
"The response prioritizes the interest of our Palestinian people, and the need to completely stop the ongoing war against the Gaza Strip," Hamas and Islamic Jihad said in a joint statement. "The Palestinian delegation expressed its willingness to deal positively in order to reach an agreement that will end this war against our people, with a sense of national responsibility," it added.
Doha and Cairo later confirmed that they had received the response from Hamas and Islamic Jihad. "Egypt and Qatar's mediation efforts with the US continue until an agreement is reached. The mediators will study the response and coordinate with the parties concerned regarding the next steps," the foreign ministries in Qatar and Egypt said together. The White House also said they accepted the proposal, and are now studying it. "It is helpful that we have an answer from Hamas," said the spokesman for the US National Security Council.
