The IDF has released the names of the two reservists who were killed in the crash of a Black Hawk helicopter on the "Philadelphi" route between Gaza and Egypt: Master Sergeant Daniel Alush (37) from Tel Aviv-Yafo, and Master Sergeant Tom Ish-Shalom (38) from Ness Harim. Both men were experienced fighters in the elite 669 Airborne Rescue and Evacuation Unit.
Tom Ish-Shalom, born in Kibbutz Hanita, leaves behind his wife, Carmit, and three children—Yotam (13), and twins Mia and Gaya (11). He had volunteered to return to operational activity after the outbreak of the October 7 war. Ish-Shalom was known for his love of nature, travel, and his dedication to his community. His friends and neighbors in Ness Harim described him as "a true friend" who always gave with "a smile, kindness, and joy for life."
Daniel Alush leaves behind his wife, Kim Rakes, and two young children, Tommy (5) and Niko (1 year and 4 months). Known for his charismatic and friendly nature, Elosh worked for a high-tech company specializing in data analysis. His friends remembered him as the "social center" of their group, always ready to help others. Alush was described as "devastatingly handsome with the best heart" and deeply cherished by those around him.
Details of the Helicopter Crash
The helicopter, a Black Hawk model from the Air Force's 123rd "Desert Birds" Squadron, crashed at 00:32 while attempting to land and evacuate an injured engineering soldier operating under the Givati Brigade. Moments before touchdown, the helicopter hit the ground, resulting in a crash that injured all eight crew members, including Elosh and Ish-Shalom, who were killed.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the crash was caused by either a technical malfunction or human error, and not by enemy fire. All eight injured crew members were evacuated to Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva by a coordinated ground and aerial rescue operation.
The IDF has since established an investigative committee to determine the exact cause of the crash. Air Force Commander General Tomer Bar is overseeing the investigation, and the committee has already started gathering evidence at the crash site.
Tributes Pour In
MK Hili Trooper, a resident of Ness Harim, expressed his sorrow: “My heart breaks for Tom and Daniel. They are the great heroes of the war, always working in the shadows until they fell.”
MK Merav Ben Ari, who knew Daniel personally, also paid tribute: "Elosh, our dear and beloved Alush. A father, a partner, and a friend to all. My heart is broken.”
As the investigation into the crash continues, the IDF and the Israeli public mourn the loss of these two brave reservists, whose heroism and dedication will be remembered.
