IDF investigation on the killing of 7 aid workers: serious failures in decision-making

The killing of seven aid workers in the Gaza Strip by the IDF was attributed to a lack of discipline among commanders in the field, rather than coordination problems between the army and humanitarian organizations, according to the IDF findings.

The incident that occurred last Tuesday night in the center of the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of seven workers from the humanitarian aid organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) in an IDF attack, has prompted significant repercussions within the Israeli military. An investigation led by Major General Yoav Har-Evan found serious failures in identification and decision-making, leading to an attack contrary to orders.

The investigation revealed that IDF forces mistakenly identified WCK vehicles as carrying Hamas operatives, resulting in the fatal attack. As a consequence, the brigade commander, a colonel in the reserves, has been removed from their position. Additionally, the commanders of the Southern Command, Division 162, and the involved brigade have been reprimanded.

In response to the IDF's investigation, WCK has called for an independent inquiry into the killing of its employees, emphasizing the importance of accountability and justice.

The IDF expressed deep regret for the loss of innocent lives and affirmed its commitment to humanitarian efforts while continuing to combat Hamas. However, the decision to remove senior officers has sparked criticism from some ministers. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir criticized the decision, viewing it as detrimental to morale and military effectiveness.
