Sergeant Yuval Shoham (22) from Jerusalem, an armored fighter in the 9th Battalion of the "Iron Footprints" (401) formation, fell today (Sunday) during a Givati attack in Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip. "The child is not us and I am I am I am coming. Yuval Shoham, our dearest beloved in Adam, was killed this morning in the Gaza Strip. Funeral details will be provided later," his family announced.
Yuval is a graduate of Himmelfarb High School in Jerusalem, and is the high school's tenth casualty in the war. The school also lost Rabbi Avi Goldberg, who fell during the war, and served as a teacher at the high school - years after he graduated from it.
Zviel Solomon, who was Yuval's educator at Himmelfarb, said: "Yuval was a boy with very strong physical and mental strengths. He was a very prominent person in every field. An intellectual boy of an unusual level for any high school kid. He came from a very moral home. A curious and intelligent kid who picks up on things quickly. He was a man of justice who pursued justice and values. He was very opinionated. When he 'dressed up' on a certain issue, he was all about it. He volunteered for a lot of things, he was always busy doing good. He loved his family very much. He was in Gaza for a long time. His three brothers served in Gaza. This is a truly Zionist family with values at the highest level. The Shoham family is Himmelfarb." He added: "There is a school here that is also Zionist, and education is education in values and first and foremost to be a human being. This is also expressed in fighting. It is a school that educates children to be moral and have good qualities, and this is expressed in social involvement. We will always be there for the people of Israel. This is also reflected in the army."
Yuval's parents, Efi and Asherat Shoham, leaders of the "HaKhal" community in the Baka neighborhood of Jerusalem, are close friends of John and Rachel, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who was murdered in Hamas captivity in Gaza, and whose body was brought to Israel.
"Hersh was here on Simchat Torah Eve. On Simchat Torah night, he was still here in the synagogue and dancing here," Asherat said last September, after the announcement of the difficult news. "Yesterday night, we realized with all the rumors what was happening. People from the community didn't sleep all night. At five in the morning we heard the news. We accompany the Goldberg-Polin family all year. Here John prays. Here Hersh prayed. This morning we spontaneously organized to create a space for the community. It really feels like he's our son. Everyone is very involved in the struggle. The whole neighborhood here has Hersh's signs. We didn't think it would end like this. "Everyone was hoping that we would meet in the joy of liberation and not in this end. We never imagined such an end."
