U.S. Strikes Iranian Revolutionary Guard Targets as Tehran Retaliates Against American Bases

The United States and Iran have entered a new and dangerous phase of direct military confrontation after American forces launched strikes against targets belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), following an Iranian attempt to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks against U.S. forces in the region.

The latest escalation follows a U.S. strike on Larak Island, near the Strait of Hormuz, where American forces targeted two Iranian launchers that Washington said were being prepared for the deployment of naval mines into the strategic waterway.

U.S. Central Command said the operation was intended to eliminate an immediate threat to civilian shipping and the free movement of international commerce through the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States subsequently launched a broader wave of strikes against IRGC-linked targets inside Iran on Tuesday.

Washington: Iran Posed an Immediate Threat

The Pentagon said the American operation was designed to prevent Iran from rebuilding its ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump described the strikes as justified, saying they were carried out in response to Iran's attempts to lay additional sea mines and to an Iranian missile attack against a U.S. military base in Jordan.

Trump warned that Iran would face a significantly more powerful American response if it retaliated again.

The U.S. military has spent weeks clearing Iranian mines from internationally recognized shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz.

The operation is strategically significant because the strait is one of the world's most important energy corridors, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and providing a major route for global oil shipments.

Iran Strikes Back

Iran did not limit its response to diplomatic condemnation.

The IRGC announced a retaliatory operation against American military positions in the region, including U.S. bases in Jordan.

Iranian authorities said missiles and drones were launched against the King Hussein and Al Azraq military bases in Jordan in what the IRGC described as an operation to “punish the aggressor.”

The attacks marked a direct Iranian response to the American strike and raised concerns that the confrontation could spread beyond the Strait of Hormuz to U.S. military installations throughout the Middle East.

Iran has also claimed that it struck other American and allied military targets in the region. Some Iranian claims have not been independently verified, while regional air-defense systems have intercepted a number of Iranian projectiles.

Tehran Threatens Further Retaliation

Iranian officials have warned that Washington will pay a heavy price for the attacks.

The IRGC described the American operation as a strategic mistake and vowed that the United States would face consequences in both the military and economic spheres.

Iran has simultaneously sought to portray the American strikes as an attack on Iranian sovereignty and an escalation initiated by Washington.

Iranian state media have also reported civilian casualties from the latest American attacks, including deaths in the Sirik area. Those casualty figures and the circumstances surrounding the reported incident remain contested.

At the same time, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has signaled that Tehran remains interested in a return to negotiations if Washington resumes its commitments under the provisional agreement reached earlier this year.

That creates a striking contradiction in Tehran's response: Iran is simultaneously threatening military retaliation while leaving open the possibility of renewed diplomacy.

Trump Warns Iran: “Much Bigger” Attack Could Follow

Trump has made clear that Washington does not intend to absorb another Iranian attack without responding.

The president warned Tehran that any further retaliation could trigger an even larger American military operation.

The warnings come as U.S. forces remain deployed across the Middle East and as Washington attempts to prevent Iran from restoring its ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest American strikes therefore appear to have two objectives: degrading IRGC military capabilities and establishing a deterrent against renewed Iranian attacks on shipping and U.S. forces.

Hormuz at the Center of the Crisis

The Strait of Hormuz has become the central flashpoint in the confrontation.

Iran has previously used mines, fast attack boats, missiles and drones as part of its strategy for threatening maritime traffic.

American officials say the recent mine-clearing operation removed Iranian mines from internationally recognized shipping lanes, but Washington fears that Tehran could attempt to redeploy them.

The possibility of renewed mining is particularly sensitive because even a limited disruption could have consequences far beyond the Middle East.

The strait is a critical artery for global energy markets, and any prolonged interruption could push up oil prices, increase shipping and insurance costs and put additional pressure on the global economy.

A Dangerous New Phase

The latest exchange of strikes represents the most serious direct U.S.-Iran military confrontation since the previous period of hostilities was interrupted by a month-long lull.

What began as a dispute over Iranian attempts to mine the Strait of Hormuz has now developed into a broader confrontation involving American military facilities, Iranian military infrastructure and the possibility of further attacks across the region.

The key question now is whether Tehran will limit its response or launch another major wave of attacks.

Washington, meanwhile, has signaled that any further Iranian escalation will trigger a substantially stronger American response.

With both sides publicly warning the other against further escalation, the Strait of Hormuz has once again become the focal point of a crisis that could rapidly affect not only the Middle East but also global energy markets and international shipping.
