In a heartbreaking account from Beit Hanun, 31-year-old Asil paints a grim picture of life in Gaza, describing it as an "open mass grave." Displaced to Rafah with her family since the beginning of the war, Asil expresses a sentiment shared by many Gazans - a daily reality where death feels like the only inevitable outcome, whether by bombing, disease, or hunger.

The reported death toll today stands at approximately 20,000 people since the conflict's onset, with additional casualties still buried under rubble and inaccessible due to ongoing fighting. According to Gaza authorities, this staggering figure represents about 1% of the Strip's population of 2.2 million people.

Despite skepticism about the reliability of these figures due to Hamas control in Gaza, experts and international human rights organizations vouch for their accuracy. The UN and The Lancet magazine have expressed confidence in the data, and even the Israeli security system's estimates aligned with Gaza's reported numbers.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) maintain that their efforts target Hamas, not civilians, yet reports suggest widespread bombings across the densely populated Gaza Strip. Residents and UN officials argue that no place or person is safe.

While some in Israel argue that "there are no innocents in Gaza," security estimates indicate that only about a third of the deceased are Hamas members. Shockingly, a UN report states that around 70% of the casualties are women and children.

Individual stories shed light on the human tragedy unfolding in Gaza. Shahada al-Bahhani, a 73-year-old teacher, perished with 23 others when their home was bombed. Another victim, five-year-old Rabab Mahmoud Nafez al-Eyadi, highlights the international criticism focusing on the mass killing of children.

As the conflict persists, extracting bodies from the rubble becomes increasingly challenging, with estimates suggesting thousands remain buried. The health system in Gaza is in shambles, exacerbated by the loss of medical personnel and facilities, leading to a severe crisis.

The IDF defends its actions, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields and operating within residential areas. They claim to adhere to international law, issuing warnings to residents before targeting areas with alleged terrorist activities. The toll on civilian lives, however, remains devastating, contributing to a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
