Settlers Attack Palestinian Village in Judea and Samaria Triggering Condemnation

Dozens of Israeli extremists attacked the Palestinian village of Qusra in the northern West Bank over the weekend, throwing stones at Palestinian residents and reportedly barricading themselves inside a Palestinian-owned home. The incident drew sharp condemnation from Israel’s political leadership and renewed concerns over escalating Jewish nationalist violence in the West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence after the end of Shabbat, describing the perpetrators as a “small group of rioters” who were breaking the law, harming the law-abiding settler population and undermining Israel’s international standing.

Netanyahu said that the Shin Bet domestic security service had joined the investigation and called on law-enforcement authorities to arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.

Homeowner Describes Hours of Confrontation

Louis Bairouti, the Palestinian owner of the house, told Reuters that he and others were trapped inside for approximately an hour and a half while Israeli settlers surrounded the building and threw stones at it.

“We were besieged inside my house,” Bairouti said, claiming that the number of attackers grew from several people to more than 70.

According to his account, when Israeli security forces arrived, Palestinians were subjected to tear gas and were subsequently detained, handcuffed and blindfolded.

Bairouti also alleged that he was prevented from returning to his own home after the army declared the area a closed military zone.

Israeli military officials, however, said that the forces initially acted to remove the rioters from the house and separate the two populations to protect the Palestinian residents.

IDF: Dozens of Israeli Rioters Entered Qusra

The Israel Defense Forces said that “dozens of Israeli rioters” entered Qusra and began throwing stones at Palestinians and other civilians.

The military said that several dozen Israeli rioters barricaded themselves inside a Palestinian home while Palestinian residents were still inside.

The attackers also reportedly targeted foreign journalists, throwing stones at their vehicles and smashing a car windshield.

The group subsequently moved toward the nearby Palestinian village of Jalud. Video footage showed masked individuals traveling on white pickup trucks.

The IDF said that three vehicles allegedly used by the rioters to reach the villages were confiscated. Israeli authorities did not announce arrests at the time of the initial reports.

Palestinian Injuries Reported

Israeli security forces acknowledged reports of Palestinian injuries, including a Palestinian woman who was described as having suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was evacuated by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

A Palestinian paramedic, Saddam Oday, said that between 40 and 50 settlers surrounded the house and continued throwing stones after residents moved onto the roof and later returned inside.

The Palestinian local council head said that several members of the family were injured during the confrontation.

The accounts of the incident remain disputed, with Israeli and Palestinian witnesses providing significantly different descriptions of the conduct of the security forces.

Permanent Security Presence in Qusra and Jalud

Following the violence, Israeli authorities decided to maintain a permanent presence of IDF troops and Border Police units in the Qusra and Jalud area until further notice.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir held security assessments following the incident and praised the forces involved in responding to the violence.

The deployment comes amid growing concern within Israel’s security establishment over Jewish nationalist violence in the West Bank and its impact on the military’s broader security mission.

President Herzog: “A Red Line Has Been Crossed”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog also condemned the violence, calling the events in Qusra a serious crossing of the line.

“This is another case in a series of events that constitute a stain on Israel’s image,” Herzog said, calling for decisive action by the government, security agencies, law-enforcement authorities and the judicial system.

Herzog stressed that those responsible should be brought to justice and that the phenomenon must be confronted at its roots.

Eisenkot Accuses Government of Losing Control

Opposition politician and “Yashar!” chairman Gadi Eisenkot sharply criticized the government, arguing that the escalation of Jewish nationalist violence reflects a broader loss of control in the West Bank.

Eisenkot described the situation as a security, political, diplomatic and moral failure and accused Netanyahu and his coalition partners of allowing political considerations to undermine Israel’s national interests.

He argued that the growing violence diverts the IDF from its primary mission of combating terrorism and creates additional security challenges at a time when Israel is already facing threats on multiple fronts.

Growing Concern Over Jewish Nationalist Violence

The Qusra incident comes only weeks after the establishment of an unauthorized outpost near Palestinian homes in the same area. The outpost, described as an extension of the Tal Talpiyot outpost, triggered international criticism and reportedly drew the attention of the White House.

Israeli troops were subsequently filmed praying alongside settlers at the site, while the military made several attempts to remove the outpost.

The United States Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, previously described violent Israeli extremists involved in the confrontation as “Israeli terrorists.”

IDF Chief Warned of Potential West Bank Escalation

The latest violence also follows a reported warning by IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir to Prime Minister Netanyahu that the West Bank could spiral out of control because of rising Jewish nationalist crime.

According to reports, the warning was delivered during a recent meeting at Central Command attended by Zamir, Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Blot, Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz.

Israeli security officials reportedly told the leadership that the West Bank was “on the verge of an explosion” because of the growing number of nationalist incidents.

The concern extends beyond the immediate threat to Palestinians. Security officials have warned that repeated incidents of Jewish extremist violence require military resources and divert troops and intelligence capabilities from efforts to combat Palestinian terrorism.

A Growing Test for Israel’s Security Establishment

The Qusra confrontation therefore represents more than an isolated incident of settler violence. It has become a test of Israel’s ability to enforce its own law in the West Bank while maintaining security control over a highly volatile environment.

The involvement of the IDF, Border Police, police and Shin Bet in the investigation, together with the decision to reinforce the area, signals the seriousness with which Israeli authorities are treating the escalation.

The central question now is whether those responsible for the violence will be identified and prosecuted—and whether the government and security establishment can prevent further incidents from developing into a broader cycle of violence in the West Bank.
