Brigadier General Avi Rosenfeld, commander of the Gaza Division (Division 143) in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), has announced his retirement following 30 years of dedicated service. In a heartfelt letter addressed to Gaza Envelope authorities, Rosenfeld expressed deep regret over his perceived failure to protect the Gaza Strip during the events of October 7th.
Rosenfeld acknowledged the significant challenges faced during the incident, where terrorists infiltrated Israeli territory, resulting in casualties and loss of life. Despite his intention to step down, Rosenfeld emphasized his commitment to remaining in his position until a successor is appointed. He also pledged to actively participate in investigations and learning processes to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Appointment Delay Amidst Investigation
The planned replacement for Rosenfeld, Brigadier General Barak Hiram, commander of Division 99, faces a delay in his appointment due to ongoing investigations. Hiram's decision to order the bombing of a house in Bari, where hostages were being held, resulted in casualties, including 13 Israelis and the terrorists responsible. Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has frozen Hiram's appointment pending the conclusion of the investigation, expected in the coming weeks.
Restoring Trust and Ensuring Security
In his communication with local authorities, Rosenfeld stressed the importance of rebuilding trust between residents of the Gaza Envelope and the IDF. He emphasized the need for strong assurances that similar security breaches will not occur in the future, underscoring the commitment of the IDF to uphold security measures and protect Israeli citizens.
As Rosenfeld bids farewell to his esteemed military career, his departure marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to enhance security and restore confidence in the region.
