Tel Aviv University announced last night (Wednesday) that it will confer an honorary doctorate on Einav Tsangauker, one of the leading voices in the national movement for the return of Israel’s abductees from Gaza.

The university cited Tsengauker’s “uncompromising, courageous and inspiring struggle” over nearly two years, during which she became a symbol of perseverance, solidarity, and moral leadership for the families of the abducted and for the Israeli public at large.

A Symbol of Strength and Unity

In a statement, the university noted that the decision reflects both recognition of Tsengauker’s personal courage and a broader national longing for the return of all abductees, living and deceased.

“Einav Tsengauker represents the social movement for the return of the abductees and was one of its most prominent leaders,” the statement said.
“Since October 7, she has come to symbolize social solidarity, the sanctity of life, unity, and parenthood.”

Tsengauker’s son, Matan, was one of the hostages held in Gaza and returned to Israel on October 13, alongside 19 other living abductees. The university described that day as “one of the most emotional moments in Israel’s recent history.”

Honoring a National Cause

Tel Aviv University added that the award also acknowledges the continued struggle for the return of those still held or confirmed deceased, including Hadar Goldin, the fallen soldier and son of Prof. Simcha and Leah Goldin, long-time members of the university’s academic community.

The award ceremony will take place in May 2026, during the annual meeting of the university’s Board of Trustees on the Tel Aviv University campus.

At the same event, American businessman and philanthropist Steve Witkoff will receive the George S. Wise Medal, in recognition of his contributions to humanitarian and diplomatic efforts supporting the return of the abductees.
