Significant news for Holocaust survivors: Their annual pension will increase by more than NIS 2,500. A memorandum of law to increase the annual grant for Holocaust survivors has been circulated for public comment. As part of the budget discussions, Deputy Prime Minister Yair Lapid, Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Minister of Social Equality Meirav Cohen agreed to increase the annual grant for Holocaust survivors. Today, the Ministry of Finance raised for public comments a memorandum of law stating that the annual grant transferred to Holocaust survivors will increase to the amount of NIS 6,500.
Today, there are about 65,000 Holocaust survivors who immigrated after 1953 who receive an annual grant under the Holocaust Survivors' Benefits Act. In addition, some 51,000 people from Arab and Iranian countries, victims of racist and anti-Semitic harassment during World War II, receive a similar grant in light of the Finance Minister's decision on the matter. The annual grant currently stands at NIS 3,991 and is now proposed to be increased by an additional NIS 2,509, with the total budget for the issue expected to be NIS 300 million.
The Ministry of Finance said today that this is a significant assistance to this population that joins other measures promoted by the government within the state budget, such as raising the supplement to income for the elderly to 70% of the minimum wage and raising disability benefits.
Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman: "In my opinion, this government is promoting many moves to help the elderly population in general and Holocaust survivors in particular.
The Minister for Social Equality, Meirav Cohen: "One of the main reasons why I wanted to head the Ministry of Social Equality again was to continue working on critical issues for senior citizens in general and Holocaust survivors in particular. We will continue to work to increase the resources invested in Holocaust survivors. These survivors deserve to live the rest of their lives in a dignified and respectful manner. In order to bring more news on the subject soon. "
