The Bennett-Lapid government has come to an end. The announcement by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid that they had decided to advance the election put the political system in a spin.
The bill to dissolve the Knesset will go to a preliminary reading next week. It will then be submitted for preparation to one of the Knesset committees in preparation for the vote in the second and third readings. The Knesset has the option of advancing the vote to final approval within a day or at most a week, and this also depends on agreements on the election date.
In any case, if the Knesset is dissolved through the law to dissolve the Knesset, the elections will be held within 90 days. According to estimates, the voting day will take place at the end of October.
Deputy Prime Minister Yair Lapid will take up his post as Prime Minister immediately after the approval of the law to dissolve the Knesset in the second and third readings. His entry into office does not require a vote in the Knesset in light of the fact that he is serving in the alternate position.
The US ambassador to Israel said that US President Joe Biden's visit would take place as planned. Lapid will be the one to welcome the president, who will also meet with Bennett.
The election reopens the race between the Netanyahu bloc and the ultra-Orthodox for the center-left bloc. One of the main questions is whether Gideon Saar will run alongside a right-wing party led by Bennett or with Blue and White led by Gantz. Both options have been explored recently.
MK Amichai Shikli, one of the main causes of the fall of the government, has no option but to run in an existing party but in a new party. It is possible that in order to prevent the loss of votes - one of the right-wing parties will offer him a ministerial post at her expense if he retires from the race.
A more intriguing question is whether the political partnership between Bennett and Shaked will continue in the upcoming elections or whether the minister will leave due to the fact that the prime minister is more attracted to the center. The latter has recently explored the possibility of taking over, together with MK Nir Auerbach, the Jewish Home Party, which will use the two for connections with other parties.
If, after voting in the elections again, as in past cases, there is no decision and no candidate succeeds in forming a government, Lapid will continue in his position as transitional prime minister, as Netanyahu did during three election campaigns. However, the government will be limited and the Knesset will be paralyzed.
