An Israeli cargo ship was attacked in the Persian Gulf, near the UAE port of Fujairah, according to a report in Lebanon. According to the report, this is a ship carrying cars called the "Ray Canopy", which made its way from Kuwait to the Emirates, waving the Bahamas flag.
The ship, owned by Israeli businessman Rami Unger, was hit by missile fire - and the damage caused to it is defined as light. Following the injury, she was forced to enter the port area of the UAE and perform damage control.
Media close to the Iranian regime reported that the damage to the ship occurred after a 48-hour follow-up - from the time the ship left al-Ahmadi port in Kuwait until it reached the Fujairah area. The attack took place at the "right moment" for the attackers.
This attack joins a series of cases in which Israeli and Iranian ships have been attacked in recent months. The Unews news agency close to Iran reports that the ship, which is carrying cars, was standing 48 hours before the attack in the port of al-Ahmadi in Kuwait.
The ship, a PCC (car carrier), sailed under the Bahamas flag. It was launched in 2015 and leased by the Japanese company NYK. At the time of the attack, she was not in the port, but was cruising in and out of the Arabian Sea.
The injury was very minor. Apparently not even a hole opened in the ship, but only a slight damage to the side, and above the water line.
The damage to the ship, which was reported in the media close to Iran, occurs against the background of the explosion that took place at the Iranian nuclear facility in Natanz, and is attributed to Israel. Following the blast, which US and Israeli intelligence sources say will significantly delay Iran's uranium enrichment, the Islamic Republic announced earlier today that it would begin enriching uranium to 60%.
Iranian television reported that Tehran had announced the move to the IAEA - the International Atomic Energy Agency. According to the AP, this is the highest level of uranium enrichment ever in the Iranian nuclear program.
As mentioned, the attack on the ship is the latest in a series of cases. Last week, an Iranian Revolutionary Guards reconnaissance ship, the Sabiz, was attacked in the Red Sea off the coast of Eritrea. The ship was attacked using naval mines attached to it. An American source said
The New York Times reported that Israel had informed the United States at the time that it was behind the attack on the ship.
At the end of February, another ship owned by Unger, HELIOS RAY, was attacked. The ship was then hit by an explosion during a cruise in the Gulf of Oman area, and although no one was hurt - it had to retrace its steps. The ship was transporting cars to Singapore from the city of Damam in Saudi Arabia. As a result of the explosion, two holes about a meter and a half in diameter were opened in the side of the ship, but its engine was not damaged.
