Newly appointed Mossad Director Roman Gofman has removed his deputy, known publicly only as A., in his first major personnel decision since taking office, signaling a significant shift in the leadership of Israel’s foreign intelligence agency.

The Mossad confirmed that Gofman informed A. of his decision and intends to appoint a new deputy from within the organization’s ranks.

"The move was made as part of the Mossad chief’s assumption of office and his effort to shape the senior leadership team that will accompany him in meeting the goals and challenges facing the organization in the coming years," the agency said in a statement.

End of a Short-Lived Appointment

A. was appointed deputy director in December by outgoing Mossad chief David Barnea, who reportedly viewed him as a potential successor. A veteran intelligence officer, A. served in the agency for 22 years, holding a variety of operational positions and commanding two divisions.

According to previous reports, Barnea sought to strengthen A.’s position within the organization and had hoped he would eventually assume the agency’s top role.

Close Ties to Political Leadership

A. is widely regarded as one of the Mossad’s most decorated operatives and is considered close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and members of his inner circle.

According to sources familiar with internal discussions, A. played a central role in promoting assessments that military pressure on Iran could potentially trigger political upheaval and weaken the ruling regime. He was reportedly involved in discussions with senior Israeli and American officials, including U.S. President Donald Trump and White House advisers, regarding possible scenarios for political change in Tehran.

Before becoming deputy director, A. headed the Mossad’s influence operations division. In that role, he reportedly oversaw initiatives to encourage anti-regime sentiment within Iran and to support broader efforts to challenge the Islamic Republic’s leadership.

Sources also linked him to proposals involving the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to several African destinations, including Somalia and Somaliland. While those plans were never implemented, they reportedly strengthened his standing among some senior government officials.

Gofman formally assumed office this week after Israel’s High Court of Justice rejected petitions challenging his appointment.

The petitions focused on allegations connected to the use of a teenager in an online influence operation that was exposed in 2024. The court ruled that Gofman’s conduct did not constitute a moral failing and found no evidence that he knew the individual involved was a minor.

The decision cleared the way for Gofman’s appointment despite opposition from Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and reported reservations from Barnea.

Following the ruling, Barnea publicly called on Mossad personnel to support the incoming director.

"I expect all of you to stand by Major General Gofman and assist him in assuming his position in the best possible way," Barnea wrote in a message to agency employees. "His success is the success of the Mossad and of the State of Israel."

Mossad at a Strategic Crossroads

The leadership transition comes at a critical moment for the intelligence agency.

The Mossad is expected to play a central role in shaping Israel’s response to future developments involving Iran, including potential understandings between Washington and Tehran on the nuclear issue and the activities of Iranian-backed groups, particularly Hezbollah.

In recent years, the agency has been credited with a series of high-profile operations targeting senior Iranian and Hezbollah figures, as well as sophisticated covert missions that showcased its operational capabilities.

At the same time, broader efforts to encourage regime change in Tehran have failed to achieve their objectives, leaving uncertainty about whether such strategies will continue under Gofman’s leadership.

Looking Ahead

The dismissal of the deputy director highlights Gofman’s determination to establish his own leadership team as he begins his tenure.

With regional tensions remaining high and negotiations involving Iran entering a sensitive phase, the new Mossad chief’s decisions are likely to influence Israel’s intelligence strategy and national security posture for years to come.
