The Ministry of Environmental Protection imposed a monetary sanction on the port of Ashdod under the Prevention of Sea Pollution from Land-Based Sources Law, in the amount of NIS 10,649,240 million. This amount will be deposited into the Marine Pollution Prevention Fund within 60 days.
It should be noted that the Ashdod Port Company sought to reduce this amount for which the intention was to impose a sanction, but the Ministry of Environmental Protection rejected its request.
At the beginning of July 2017, on two different occasions, the inspectors of the Marine Environmental Protection Unit discovered that the sea had been polluted by dropping a cargo of shrapnel and corn powder into the sea as part of the unloading of the cargo by Manufai, which violated the company's discharge and loading procedures. Moreover, the company did not report to the Ministry of Environmental Protection in contravention of the permit and the office staff in the field were those who identified the failure to comply with the procedures and the pollution. Although the company became aware of pollution and breach of work practices, the violation continued again even more so that the company did not act to reduce the damage and performed a repeat violation.
