The average wage in the economy in August increased significantly relative to the corresponding period last year and the main reason for this is layoffs and expenses for low-wage workers. In August, the average wage reached NIS 11,578, an increase of 7.3% compared to August 2019. CBS) published today (Wednesday).
Such a high increase in the average salary in the economy is expected to result in an increase of thousands of shekels in the salaries of ministers, Knesset members and senior officials in the economy, if there is no legislation on the temporary order proposed by Finance Minister Israel Katz to cancel the automatic salary increase on January 1.
Compared to July this year, there was actually a small decrease in the average wage, so the average wage was NIS 11,651. This is because of the addition of low-wage jobs after leaving the first closure. However, the second closure is expected to bring with it a renewed jump in average wages in September and October.
At the top of the table of the highest wage earners in Israel are employees of the scientific research and development industry with an average wage of NIS 28,660 gross per month, 2.5 times the average wage in the economy. Followed by programming and consulting workers in the field of computers with a salary of NIS 24,954. In the entire high-tech industry, the average salary is NIS 24,270.
Transportation and transportation workers earned NIS 23,881 in August, and computer and electronic and optical equipment workers brought home NIS 23,203.
In the information and communications industry, the average salary was NIS 23,044, in the electricity and water industry NIS 19,885, and in the financial services and insurance services, the salary reached NIS 16,283 in August.
At the bottom of the wage earners in Israel are hospitality and food service workers, who remained at work during the Corona crisis, with a gross wage of NIS 5,869 a month. Wages here have risen considerably, as many of those who remain in work and have not been hired by the restaurants and cafes industry are the managers and recipients of the higher wages.
In various services the salary in August was NIS 5,981, in management and support services NIS 6,230, in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industry the salary reached NIS 7,177 and in the art, entertainment and leisure industry (excluding the artists themselves) the salary reached NIS 7,342. Most of whom have been disabled for many months, are the highest paid.
The CBS data also show that due to the corona crisis, there was a 7.8% decrease in the number of employee jobs in August this year compared to the corresponding month last year, and the Israeli economy had a total of 3,425,600 employee jobs in August, a level that goes back five years. - 3.482 million jobs in total.
Will the ministers receive a salary increase? The reduction is still stuck
On October 25, the government was supposed to approve a 10% wage cut for all elected officials and senior members of the public sector. According to the law memorandum, as first published in Ynet, the list includes the president, prime minister, deputy prime minister, ministers, deputy ministers, judges, judges, the state comptroller, the governor of the Bank of Israel and another, heads of authorities and their deputies and city rabbis.
However, due to the denial of appointments that Blue and White wants by the Likud, such as the appointment of a director general to the Ministry of Justice, who will be on the committee that selects the state attorney, Blue and White vetoed all legislative activities of the Ministry of Finance.
The situation that has arisen is that the Ministry of Finance has not held a general accountant for five days and it is not even possible to withdraw a shekel from the state coffers, since there is no one to approve the expenditure. It is also not possible to bring the 2020 budget for government approval and time is running out, as in about a month and a half, until December 23, the Knesset must approve the budget in a third reading, otherwise the government will fall and elections will be announced.
Now the opposition has been added to bring the approval of the salaries of senior officials to the government and then to the approval of the Knesset, while at the same time the Treasury does not submit a proposal to prevent the government from raising the salaries of ministers and Knesset members by thousands of shekels.
Meanwhile, former Defense Minister and Yemeni Speaker Naftali Bennett yesterday submitted to the Knesset accountants a request to waive the planned salary increase (of thousands of shekels per month) for MKs starting this January. According to a calculation he made, this is an estimated waiver of about NIS 72,000 a year. "In the State of Israel, businesses have collapsed," he wrote. "Many have lost their jobs and are having a hard time bringing bread home. When my people are suffering, it is not appropriate to raise wages for ministers and MKs."
Today, Finance Minister Israel Katz teased Bennett in a Twitter tweet: "Good morning to the sleeping beauty Naftali Bennett. Attacking them on the delay, are you cynically attacking the Prime Minister and me? mozar!".
