Severe increase in unemployment and the number of unemployed in the background of the second closure and intentions to extend it until the end of October: From the last report of the Employment Service yesterday until this morning at 7:00, 14,723 new jobseekers were registered. A total of 909,460 jobseekers are currently registered with the employment service, of which 572,908 are on unpaid leave.
Since September 17, 2020, the day before New Year's Eve and the entry of restrictions, 178,020 jobseekers have been registered with the Employment Service - 162,858 of them due to leaving the Knesset and 15,162 for other reasons, mainly final dismissals of employees.
Of the job seekers registered since 17.9.2020, for 132,962 this is the second or more registration since the beginning of the corona crisis in March (about 75% of those registered in this wave).
The cost of paying unemployment benefits is expected to increase by at least NIS 1 billion due to the expulsion of so many thousands to the IDF in the second closure, when it is estimated that many of them will stay in the ICL for a long time and will not return to work immediately after the closure.
Amir Peretz: "It is time to learn from the countries that adopted the German model"
Against the background of the alarming data from the employment service, there is growing concern in the economy and in government government offices that the number of unemployed will cross the million mark within a few days, and that the first wave numbers will return.
The fear of the number of unemployed arises, among other things, due to the Prime Minister's intention to extend the second closure in at least two weeks, and due to the planning in government ministries to release the economy gradually and not hastily as was done at the end of the first closure. Today, all sources, including the prime minister, admit that the rapid opening was a mistake that led to the severe re-increase in morbidity and the urgent need for a second closure.
The Ministries of Economy and Welfare are harshly critical of the fact that the government continues to refrain from using the "German model", which would have prevented them from taking unpaid vacations of at least tens of thousands of workers.
The highly successful model in Europe is designed to prevent the sending of workers home in workplaces where there has been a decline in activity. The employee continues to receive his salary in part from the employer and the wage supplement is carried out by the government, instead of paying the employee higher unemployment benefits.
Thus, both the employer who maintains his skilled workers, the employee himself who is not harmed by his salary, and the state budget, from which a lower amount is paid to keep the employee in the workplace, are compared to the payment that the state has to make to the employee.
Economy Minister Amir Peretz told Ynet today that "in light of the sharp rise in the number of unemployed and those leaving the Knesset since the beginning of the second closure, only beyond the Knesset can the occupational bleeding stop. Immediately flexible, as well as a pre-determined compensation plan for businesses affected as a result of the closure. The only option for lowering the level of unemployment in Israel in a short period of time is the German model - the flexible application. It is time to learn from 25 countries that have already applied the model with great success. .
