U.S. Support for Israel Shows Signs of Erosion as Democratic Leaders Signal Growing Criticism

A growing debate inside the United States over support for Israel intensified this week as senior Democratic figures, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, voiced unusually sharp criticism of Israeli policy in the West Bank and warned that American support cannot be taken for granted.

Newsom, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and widely viewed as a potential future presidential contender, said in recent remarks that Washington must reassess its unconditional backing of Israel if the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu continues policies that expand settlements and deepen control over the West Bank.

According to Newsom, American political leaders must confront the reality that Israeli policies toward Palestinians are increasingly alienating U.S. public opinion and younger Democratic voters. He suggested that continued expansion of settlements and restrictions on Palestinian political rights could force a broader policy debate in Washington about military and diplomatic support for Israel.

His comments reflect a widening divide inside the Democratic Party, where grassroots activists and progressive lawmakers have grown more critical of Israel’s policies during the ongoing conflict with Palestinians.

Gallup Poll Shows Sharp Drop in Support for Israel

The political debate comes amid new data showing a significant decline in American public sympathy for Israel.

According to recent polling by Gallup, only 46% of Americans say their sympathies lie more with Israelis than Palestinians, the lowest level recorded in the 25 years the firm has tracked the question.

At the same time, approval of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has fallen dramatically. A Gallup survey conducted in July found that only 32% of Americans approve of Israel’s military actions, while 60% disapprove, marking the lowest level of support since the war began.

The polling also revealed a striking partisan divide:

  • 71% of Republicans approve of Israel’s military actions.

  • Only about 8% of Democrats express similar support.

Analysts say the growing gap reflects deeper ideological changes within American politics, particularly among younger voters and progressive Democrats who increasingly view the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a human-rights framework.

Democratic Base Becoming More Critical of Netanyahu

Experts say that criticism of Israel inside the Democratic Party is now broader than at any time in recent decades.

Studies show that unfavorable views of Israel have risen significantly among Democrats and independents, while support has remained strong among Republicans.

Surveys also indicate that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is particularly unpopular among American voters. In one recent poll, only 27% of Americans expressed support for Netanyahu, while a large majority favored an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

This shift is forcing Democratic leaders to navigate between traditional U.S.–Israel strategic ties and mounting pressure from their political base.

Long-Term Implications for U.S.–Israel Relations

For decades, support for Israel in Washington was considered one of the few truly bipartisan issues in American politics. That consensus is now showing signs of strain.

While the United States continues to provide Israel with billions of dollars in annual military aid and maintains close strategic cooperation, analysts warn that public opinion trends could eventually reshape U.S. policy, especially if Democratic leaders increasingly echo the concerns raised by figures such as Newsom.

Diplomats and policy experts say the trajectory of the conflict — particularly Israeli policies in the West Bank and Gaza — will likely determine whether the historic bipartisan backing for Israel in the United States can endure.
