The American company Rubrik announced the purchase of the Israeli cyber startup Laminar. The amount of the purchase is estimated at 200-250 million dollars. According to the announcement, Laminar will continue to operate from its offices in Tel Aviv and will form the basis for Rubric's R&D center in Israel.
Laminar was founded in 2020 by Amit Shaked (CEO of the company) and Oren Avraham (VP of Technologies), who met in the army in Unit 8200. In his last position, Shaked managed the artificial intelligence group of Magic Leap's R&D center in Israel, while Avraham was the first employee at the medical cyber company Medigate, which was sold for $400 million to Clarity. The company has raised approximately $67 million to date. Among its investors: Tiger Global, Salesforce Ventures, Miron Capital, Sentinel One, Insight Partners and TLV Partners , as well as a series of VPs of information security from global companies. It employs about 100 people.
The field in which Laminar operates is considered one of the densest in the local cyber industry: protection and control of corporate data in the cloud. Because of the accelerated transition to the cloud, a growing problem has arisen: companies have a large amount of very sensitive data stored in various systems and databases in the cloud, such as medical information, financial information, payment details, trade secrets, transaction details and more. The data is "scattered" in many places and databases, and it is difficult to track it and verify who gets access to it - and this can lead to a situation where the most sensitive data is exposed to leakage or spillage.
The company explained in the past that its technology helps companies prevent information breaches and better protect information in the cloud, through the mapping of the information in the cloud and its classification, ongoing security, identification of unusual activity and in-depth analysis of attempts to access information. "The company provides organizations with visibility and control of the activity in the cloud, allows to protect the information in each of the cloud service providers," they said.
The buyer, the Rubric company, deals, among other things, with protection against ransomware attacks and data management and backup, and was established in 2014. According to PitchBook, it employs about 3,300 people and its value was previously estimated at $4 billion. Last June it was announced that the company hired the services of an investment banker in preparation for an IPO in 2024. According to Reuters, its annual revenue rate amounts to about 600 million dollars. The company said that Laminar's solution will allow it to increase its offering of cyber solutions in the cloud, SaaS and enterprise environments.
