Cisco has completed the acquisition of Israeli cybersecurity firm Astrix, which specializes in securing non-human identities and AI-driven systems, in a deal valued at approximately $400 million, according to sources familiar with the transaction.

The acquisition reflects growing demand for advanced cybersecurity solutions as organizations increasingly deploy autonomous AI agents and interconnected applications.

FOCUS ON AI-DRIVEN SECURITY RISKS

Founded in 2021 and based in Tel Aviv, Astrix develops technology that enables organizations to securely connect third-party and internal applications—particularly AI-based systems—to sensitive digital assets.

Its platform focuses on managing and protecting “non-human identities,” including API keys, service accounts, and OAuth credentials, which are widely used by automated systems and AI agents. The technology can automatically detect excessive permissions, prevent unauthorized access, and mitigate risks such as supply chain attacks and data leaks.

RAPID GROWTH AND STRONG BACKING

In November 2024, Astrix raised $45 million in a Series B funding round, bringing total investment in the company to $85 million.

The round was led by Menlo Ventures through the Anthology Fund, a strategic partnership with Anthropic. Additional investors included Workday Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, CRV, and F2 Venture Capital.

The company was founded by Alon Jackson and Idan Gur, both former officers in Israel’s elite intelligence Unit 8200.

ADDRESSING A CRITICAL SECURITY GAP

In a statement, Peter Bailey, Senior Vice President at Cisco, highlighted the rapid shift toward the use of autonomous AI agents within enterprises.

While such agents boost productivity, Bailey noted they also introduce new vulnerabilities. “Only about 24% of organizations currently have effective guardrails and real-time monitoring for agent activity,” he said, describing a significant and growing security gap.

INTEGRATION INTO CISCO’S PLATFORM

Following the acquisition, Astrix’s technology will be integrated into Cisco’s security ecosystem, including its Identity Intelligence platform and Zero Trust solutions such as Duo and Secure Access.

The combined capabilities are expected to provide organizations with full visibility into AI agent activity, lifecycle management—from authorization to revocation—and real-time threat detection, including misuse of privileged access.

Cisco also plans to integrate these insights into incident response systems, including platforms like Splunk, enabling faster detection and mitigation of security incidents.

STRATEGIC EXPANSION INTO AI SECURITY

The acquisition underscores Cisco’s strategic push into AI security, a rapidly evolving field as enterprises adopt automation and machine-driven decision-making at scale.

By incorporating Astrix’s capabilities, Cisco aims to position itself at the forefront of securing next-generation digital environments, where managing non-human identities is becoming as critical as protecting human users.
