The Minister of Finance, Avigdor Lieberman, has decided to increase the income supplement for seniors. The benefit will increase by almost NIS 500 per person. The Ministry of Finance says that the move means that exercising the rights to receive income supplementation will allow the elderly to receive income above the poverty line.
Income supplement is paid to adults whose income is low, usually without a pension, and who are mainly based on an old-age pension. The average benefit today is NIS 3,230 per person per month, and will now increase to at least NIS 3,710 per month. This amount is equal to 70% of the minimum wage.
A move will take effect in 2022. The total cost of the move is NIS 1.5 billion, which will be dedicated to this in the near budget. The move is part of the new government's guidelines for increasing old-age pensions.
Although the allowance will increase for all the elderly, including Holocaust survivors, Lieberman is promoting a move in this case that will mainly help his electorate. The elderly immigrants from the Soviet Union are characterized by a low level of income due to the few years of work in Israel and a low pension. Raising the income supplement will help this audience significantly more relative to other audiences with high-income pensions, who are not eligible for the income supplement.
Finance Minister Lieberman said: "The State of Israel is committed to the elderly population and as someone who advocates Jabotinsky's doctrine and the five MMs, raising the income supplement for retirees is a necessary and main step that will be reflected in the near budget. The decision stems from broad agreements between all partners in the government and out of concern for the weak and helpless. The step that will bring all the elderly and Holocaust survivors above the existing line of poverty will directly facilitate the retirees - but also their family members and their immediate environment.
