After the government approved last night (Sunday) the proposal for the establishment of metropolitan transportation authorities by the Minister of Transportation, MK Merav Michaeli, which should allow, with the advancement of the legislation, the delegation of powers to the authorities to run public transportation tenders on Shabbat, the question arises whether the heads of the local authorities who will head the metropolitan areas are even interested in this.
According to the responses of the four largest cities in Israel to ynet's request, it seems that the picture is not simple at all: unsurprisingly in Jerusalem they announced that they would oppose, in Tel Aviv they enthusiastically support - but in Haifa (which already operates public transport on Shabbat) and Rishon Lezion - they avoid answering.
In Jerusalem, where a light rail also operates, the municipality as mentioned does not intend to operate public transportation on Shabbat. On behalf of the municipality it was stated that "the status quo in Jerusalem is one of the cornerstones that help maintain a city that allows all communities to live side by side, with mutual respect and inclusive and constructive dialogue. The mayor believes in the importance of the status quo and will do what is necessary to maintain it."
On the other hand, Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said that "for many years I have been demanding the establishment of a metropolitan transportation authority as is customary in the world, this will allow us, among other things, to promote the decision to operate public transportation on weekends. I believe that as the ultra-Orthodox should be allowed to live according to the dictates of their conscience , the secular public also deserves to live according to their needs - including getting around on the day of rest." Huldai added that "Efficient public transportation is a basic right of every citizen. It is a social and social issue - that people who do not have a private car can visit their grandmother in the hospital or have Shabbat dinner with the family."
Rishon Lezion Mayor Raz Kinstlich refrained from explicitly answering the question of the operation of public transportation on Shabbat, and only said that "as soon as the authority rests with us, we will know how to make the decisions according to the needs of our residents in the best and most accurate way." Kinstlich generally welcomed the establishment of the metropolitan authorities, noting that they will strengthen the "powers of the mayors with regard to the promotion of transportation issues in the cities and will lead to the improvement of transportation in the entire area." He added that "the mayors know the needs of the residents and their city in the best possible way - starting with adding public transportation lines and routes, to operating public transportation on Shabbat."
Haifa is the only large city where public transportation is operated on weekends, including a metro that operates 24 hours a day, and different bus lines depending on the status quo. However, Haifa Mayor Einat Kalish Rotem refrained from answering Ynet's question regarding the operation of public transportation on Shabbat within the framework of the metropolitan authorities, and the Haifa Municipality stated that "the mayor is staying abroad, and the availability to her is partial."
In the past, it was argued against Kalish Rotem that the decision not to operate the cable car on Shabbat, the first cable car line to be integrated into the public transportation system and which began operating last April, stems from its coalition considerations. However, the spokesperson of the municipality stated that "the decision on the matter is solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Transportation and the Minister".
