Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied reports of an unprecedented confrontation with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir over a proposed military operation related to Iran, following allegations that the military leadership was concerned about the risks of escalation on the eve of Israel’s October 27 general election.
The controversy began Sunday, when Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Zamir had resisted carrying out an unspecified military directive that could trigger a rapid confrontation with Iran. According to the report, the chief of staff requested further discussions and written legal authorization from the political leadership before proceeding.
The report raised questions about the timing of potential military action and whether the security establishment believed an operation was necessary before the election.
Netanyahu rejected the allegations, insisting that no confrontation had taken place.
“There was no fight between us,” the prime minister said in an interview with Channel 14, describing the reports as “nonsense.”
Netanyahu Accuses Critics of Diverting Attention From Iranian Threat
Netanyahu argued that the reports were intended to distract the public from warnings by Israeli security officials that Iran could attempt to interfere in the election.
“Someone here is trying to start a fight, to blur the fact that the chief of staff himself said, and the head of IDF Military Intelligence said, and the head of the Mossad said, that Iran is trying to harm the elections,” Netanyahu said.
The prime minister added that Israel was preparing to confront possible Iranian interference.
Netanyahu also said he had instructed the IDF and Mossad to work toward toppling the Iranian regime, although he did not publicly establish whether those instructions were connected to the specific military operation described in the Channel 12 report.
The nature of the alleged directive has not been disclosed, and the reported confrontation has not been independently confirmed.
Defense Minister Katz Rejects Reports of a Rift
Defense Minister Israel Katz also denied that there was a disagreement between the political leadership and the IDF over Iran.
“The reports of disagreements between the political leadership and the IDF on Iran are completely baseless and false,” Katz said in a statement on Monday.
He added that Israel had no intention of initiating an attack on Iran before the election, while warning that any Iranian attack on Israel would be met with a forceful response.
The statements from Netanyahu and Katz directly contradict the account published by Channel 12. The broadcaster’s report, however, relied on unnamed sources and did not disclose the precise nature of the military directive.
CNN Reports Netanyahu Sought Joint Strike With Washington
A separate report by CNN on Monday added an international dimension to the controversy.
Citing two U.S. officials and an Israeli security source, CNN reported that Netanyahu had pressed President Donald Trump to approve a joint U.S.-Israeli strike against Iran before the Israeli election.
According to the report, the Trump administration urged Israel to wait until Washington was prepared to participate in possible coordinated military operations. The Israeli source told CNN that Zamir had warned U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine that an attack could disrupt the Israeli election.
The report also suggested that concerns over missile-defense readiness and the potential need for American military support contributed to the decision to delay action.
Netanyahu’s office rejected CNN’s account, calling it “fake news.” It did not publicly provide further details addressing the specific allegations.
The claims reported by CNN have not been independently established, and the White House has not publicly confirmed an agreement to conduct a future joint strike.
Opposition Leaders Question the Timing
The reports sparked criticism from opposition politicians, who questioned whether Netanyahu’s approach to Iran was being influenced by electoral considerations.
Yair Lapid accused the prime minister of seeking escalation that could delay the election. Gadi Eisenkot warned that national security and the lives of Israeli soldiers must not become instruments of political maneuvering. Avigdor Liberman also criticized Netanyahu’s reported conduct and called for accountability.
These are allegations made by political opponents. No public evidence has established that Netanyahu sought military action specifically to improve his electoral prospects or postpone the vote.
Military Decisions Carry Regional Risks
Any renewed Israeli strike against Iran could provoke retaliation and expand into a wider regional confrontation, potentially involving U.S. forces and Iran-aligned armed groups.
The reported dispute highlights the competing considerations facing Israel’s leadership: the potential operational benefits of further action against Iran, the risks of retaliation, and the importance of coordination with Washington.
It also underscores the distinction between the military’s professional assessment of operational risks and the political leadership’s authority to determine national security policy.
The reported request for written authorization remains unverified, while the nature of the proposed operation has not been publicly disclosed.
The Dispute Remains Unresolved
With Israelis scheduled to vote on October 27, the allegations have placed Netanyahu’s Iran policy under renewed scrutiny at a politically sensitive moment.
The prime minister denies any confrontation with Zamir, the defense minister says there were no plans to initiate an attack before the election, and Netanyahu’s office has dismissed CNN’s account of efforts to secure an immediate joint strike with the United States.
The conflicting accounts leave key questions unanswered: whether a specific operation was proposed, what military assessments were presented to the political leadership, and whether Washington asked Israel to postpone potential action.
For now, the allegations remain disputed, and neither the precise military directive nor the full circumstances behind the reported tensions have been publicly established.
