In Tel Aviv last night one of the most stormy demonstrations took place since the outbreak of the war. In a dramatic move, families of abductees announced during the weekly rally they held in the abductees' square in Tel Aviv, that they decided to intensify the struggle - and went on a march. Some of the families gathered in front of the Kariya, on Begin Road and then blocked the Ayalon lanes - while others marched on Dizengoff Street.
The announcements at the rally about embarking on a civil struggle were made by Shir Siegel, the daughter of the kidnapped Keith and Aviva who returned from captivity in Hamas, and together with her also Shira Elbag - the mother of the kidnapped Liri Elbag.
"We will not beg anymore. We know there is a deal on the table and you are preventing it from happening. From today you are going to see us all over the country and we are going to burn it, because we are tired of you lying to us. You tell us that you are doing everything - you are not doing everything," she said Seagull song. Shira Albag called on the citizens to join the families: "After months in which you were here by our side, the time has come to start a fight against indifference and in favor of life. I am asking you now - take to the streets."
The decision of the families, most of whom are identified with the headquarters of the families of the abductees, did not come in a vacuum - according to them. Omri Shattioi, Idan Shattioi's brother, explained that "there are several things that shook us as a system. The news about the stalled negotiations, the feeling that the negotiations are going on for too long. It feels like there is no control. Another thing - the decision to go on a break is unthinkable The Knesset of Israel goes into recess when there are 134 abductees in Gaza. There is no way."
A demonstration by the organizations calling for the early elections is expected to take place in front of the Knesset today. Opposition leader Yair Lapid is expected to give a speech at the demonstration, after which a protest tent will be set up that will remain throughout the last week of Knesset activity - before it goes into recess.
Some of the demonstrators in Tel Aviv, as mentioned, marched on Dizengoff Street. Some of the family members tried to encourage the residents who were sitting in bars and restaurants - to join them. "While you get the drink you like to drink, remember that there are 134 people that what they get is a quarter of a glass of water, sometimes salty - and also beatings. They don't go out to have fun, they can't go back to their lives, and neither can we," said Ilan Dalal Gilboa on a megaphone - For those who live in Dizengoff. Avivit, the sister of Hanan Yavlonka, who was kidnapped in Gaza, called out to the bar residents: "If my brother sees this now, he will explode. Get up from the chairs. I am also a Tel Avivian who hangs out at Dizengoff. My brother used to hang out too - but he can't."
Last night's demonstrations, as mentioned - one of the stormiest since the outbreak of the war - united together. Those calling for early elections demonstrated in Kaplan, and when the rally was over - many came in the direction. Bonfires were lit, and torches were also extinguished using fire extinguishers used by police officers. During the evening, some of the protesters also advanced to the Ayalon lanes - and after they got down to the road, the police blocked it for traffic. The police arrested 16 demonstrators - and determined that it was an illegal demonstration.
In order to disperse the protesters, the police vehicle spraying water on the protesters was brought to the Ayalon lanes. Documentation from the scene revealed that this vehicle was also used against protesters who left the road - and tried to get off it. The police stated that protesters even shook a police car. The protesters were dispersed using means to disperse demonstrations. Mor Korngold, the brother of Tal Shoham, who was kidnapped in Gaza, claimed that a policeman beat him on the way to peace in Tel Aviv. According to him, he pointed to the picture of his kidnapped brother on his shirt, but the policeman continued to beat him.
The police stated: "The Israel Police considers the right to protest as a cornerstone in a democratic country and allows protests as long as they are held within the framework of the law. At the same time, the police will not allow disturbances of any kind or damage to freedom of movement and any behavior that may endanger the safety of the public."
Other kidnapped families stated yesterday that they intend to act for the immediate replacement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Ayala Metzger, the daughter-in-law of the abductee Yoram Metzger, opened the statement in the prayer carried by about 20 families, who said: "This is the 176th day that our family members have been in Gaza. It is difficult for us to say the following things, but we have no choice. The one who left us no choice is the Prime Minister who rejects proposals and hardens positions."
In the meantime, a low-level team will arrive in Egypt today, trying to bypass Qatar by brokering a hostage deal. Hamas demands the cancellation of the corridor that dismembers the Strip and the return of all residents. Israel agrees to much less, and at the same time will ask for the bodies of the soldiers from Etan Cliff and the release of the civilians - Avra Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed. Depending on the developments, it will be decided whether it makes sense to add Mossad head Dadi Barnea and Shin Bet head Ronan Bar to the members of the delegations.
