One year and two months after the crisis and more than three months after leaving the third quarantine, and probably the last at this stage - there are still 460,000 unemployed in Israel, of whom 52% are women, with about half of the job seekers being young up to age 34 and half unemployed. Fear: It will be difficult for a large proportion of those sitting at home to find work in the coming months. This emerges from new data from the Employment Service published on Monday.
After the unemployment rate dropped to 8% in March, unemployment benefits are expected to fall at the end of this month to 90% of the wages paid to those left unemployed before they went on unpaid leave or were fired. If the unemployment rate fell in April (data not yet published) by less than 7.5% - unemployment benefits will be abolished altogether in the second half of next month, June.
It is now unclear whether there will indeed be another significant drop in the number of unemployed, as many of them have nowhere to go and many jobs have reduced the manpower in the business and store. At the same time, some of the unemployed will probably have to compromise on a workplace where they will earn less than before the corona crisis, as in any case the payment of unemployment benefits will be stopped in exactly 50 days.
52% of all job seekers now are women, and among job seekers who are left without an employer, they constitute 53.5% and it is estimated that they will have more difficulty returning to work than men. The young, up to the age of 34, are the largest group among the unemployed in the age distribution - 206,430 job seekers are young, of whom 101,381 are left without an employer and the fear is, according to the employment service, that they will find it difficult to return to work.
50% of all job seekers of all ages (231,445) are left without an employer, 82% are laid off and those who are left out of the work force under compelling circumstances. It should be noted that, among other things, more than 80,000 businesses have been closed in the past year, and everyone who worked in them has in fact lost the job they can now return to. The employment service also warns that about 70% of all jobseekers (321,219) have been out of the workforce for more than six months in a row, compared with 64% of those who are without an employer.
Segmenting the 462,738 job seekers claiming active unemployment by employment, it appears that 10.4% (48,347) are teaching, education and training workers; 7.7% (35,822) are sales workers; 6.7% (31,145) are employees of restaurants, food and events and 9% (41,570) are general workers with no significant employment experience.
According to the director of the employment service, Rami Graur, "In about seven weeks, the unemployment benefit entitlement determined for all registrants since the outbreak of the crisis will expire, and as we warned, we are expected to get there when hundreds of thousands have not yet returned to work. The worrying figure is more than 230,000 jobseekers who are left without an employer and will find it very difficult to return to the labor force, including more than 100,000 young people.
"We are continuing our efforts to return jobseekers to the labor force, and as soon as we are budgeted we will continue the professional training in cooperation with the employers. Next week we will hold a virtual job fair with the Histadrut in which more than 17,000 vacancies will be advertised." Sign up for the fair and find your next job there. "
