A recent survey has revealed a significant decline in American support for Israel, with only 46% of adults expressing more sympathy for Israel over the Palestinians when asked, "Who do you sympathize with more?" This marks the lowest level of support Israel has seen in the 25 years the survey has been conducted and follows a similar downward trend seen in 2024, when support was recorded at 51%, tying with 2001 for the lowest ever recorded.
The decline in support for Israel has been consistent since 2020, with a 14% drop over the last five years. Meanwhile, support for the Palestinians has surged, with the latest survey showing 33% of Americans now sympathize more with Palestinians, a significant increase from just 15% in 2016.
A Partisan Divide
Support for Israel is increasingly divided along partisan lines. Among Republican voters, support for Israel remains strong at 75%, with only 10% expressing support for the Palestinians. In contrast, Democratic voters have demonstrated a sharp shift in their sympathies, with 59% supporting the Palestinians and only 21% expressing support for Israel. This marks a stark contrast between the two major political parties in the U.S.
Rising Support for Two-State Solution
In terms of solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, 55% of Americans overall support a two-state solution, while 31% oppose it. However, the partisan divide is also evident here: 76% of Democratic voters support a two-state solution, compared to 41% of Republicans.
The decline in support for Israel is particularly pronounced among younger Americans, especially among Democrats. On college campuses, where anti-Israel sentiment has been rising, there has been an uptick in anti-Israel and, in some cases, anti-Semitic rhetoric, reflecting the broader trend of shifting public opinion.
As the trend of growing support for Palestinians continues, the U.S.'s relationship with Israel and the Middle East remains a point of political and social division, with younger generations and Democratic voters leading the shift in attitudes.
