Economist: Israel failed fighting the Corona pandemic because of arrogance and internal struggles

The corona plague is far from over, and the death toll from it worldwide is already approaching one million. However, although the basic tools for curbing the plague are already known to all, governments continue to fail to address its basic treatment, says the weekly Economist, which cites Israel as an example of such failure, due to arrogance and internal struggles.
An article in the weekly said that although the number of patients in Corona in the world is probably much higher than current estimates, there are reasons for optimism, whether due to the slowdown in mortality or due to the vaccine that will probably be approved soon. But even in the best-case scenario, the epidemic will likely remain a part of everyday life well into 2021, Economist writes. Therefore, governments like Israel, the US, Spain and the UK, which have so far failed to treat the virus, need to improve.
One of the problems facing governments is the difficulty in choosing between a policy of closure, which prevents adherence but harms the economy, and the opening of the economy and an attempt to lead a normal life. General closures such as the one Israel recently entered into are expensive and unsustainable, according to The Economist.
The article emphasizes the importance of testing and locating adhesive chains to stop the spread of the plague. Countries like Germany, South Korea and Taiwan have used a lot of testing and surveillance to identify areas of infection and slow down the rate of spread through isolation. In Germany these were slaughterhouses; In South Korea, bars and churches have been identified as hotspots. But if the pace of testing is slow, as in France, treatment fails. If there is no trust in the mechanism for locating the contagion chains, as in Israel, where the task is incumbent on the GSS, people evade identification.
Governments should choose the most sensible option for them economically and socially, the article said, noting that the first line of defense against the corona is - alongside testing and detection of contagion chains - social distance and masks, which are cheap and convenient and also very effective tools.
Opening schools, as in Denmark and Germany, should be a top priority, while opening crowded and uninhibited places like bars should not be a top priority, according to The Economist.
Clear communication from the government is also of high importance. "Governments, such as the United Kingdom, which are constantly issuing orders that are constantly changing and violated by senior officials, will find that compliance is low. But governments, such as the local government in British Columbia, Canada, which set principles and invite citizens, schools and workplaces to think about plans. "They will succeed in the effort in the coming months."
When the corona was just beginning to spread, governments were surprised and pulled the emergency brake. Today, they have no excuse, concludes "Economist." In Israel, he said, the leaders had fallen victim to the sin of arrogance and internal quarrels.
Other examples of failure are Spain, which wanted to quickly return to routine, and stopped being vigilant; UK, where tests are ineffective, and the number of infections there has been rising since July; And the U.S., where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which was once the most respected health body in the world, is not functioning properly due to mistakes, weak management and defamation on the part of the administration.
